I remember reading he was on his way to kill 3 of his tormentors...the theory that he was on his way to go on a spree to kill others wasn't confirmed, that I know of. So that could explain why he didn't kill the man in the car, or the cop. He had specific people in mind. I don't think he was out for a massacre, if to kill at all.

Yes, it was a cry for help. I don't know if his intentions of killing anyone were real, or fantasy. But just the fact he was brought to that point to even ENTERTAIN the use of violence is crucial...obviously, he's been crying for help for a long time now, and no one has had the guts or sense to listen. The fact is, more and more kids ARE resorting to violence, and adults aren't getting the clue. They blame culture and everything else but what is really going on. Granted, the culture prepetuates it, but it's all the more reason to listen to your kid when he tells you what's going on in school.

As far as video games go...the media do love to play that card, don't they? He wore black, carried a bat, etc. etc...they play it up to make him look like some sort of sociopathic outsider on the fringe, propelled by these things that thousands of kids are into...instead of what he most likely was, a kid going through his own hell most of his life and no one around who'd help him deal or get out of it.

I don't think he should have fallen on his sword, although given his probable fate as you put it, he'd be better off. I understand why you say that, believe me.

I think what should happen is that adults who have played a close part in his life throughout his school years should be held accountable in some manner (unless of course they really didn't know, but they usually do). Same with his tormentors. This kind of thing should not be happening in public schools.

Not that he isn't responsible for his own actions. But his father ignored both his son's situations, and I'm sure teachers blew it off as well, attributing it to "kids will be kids". Thuggery is thuggery at all ages. We don't tolerate this behavior from adults, and even get thrown in jail for it. Yet for kids it's alright?

It's bad enough to be forced to go these awful public schools...and then on top of it, to be threatened and abused each day is just evil. No one should have to go through it. For an adult to turn a blind eye to it, when a kid has little control over it, is disgusting and unforgivable. I swear if I was that kid's mother before this point I would have either taken him out of that school, or there would be heads rolling down the hall.

You won't hear THAT in the media.

No, you won't hear it. Child abuse (aka "bullying") is my main reason for wanting to homeschool any children I might have. The adults aren't getting the clue because they don't want to get it. They'll just go on blaming the things these bullied kids turn to for comfort. Problem is, killing a few bullies won't stop the rest, and most of the kids being bullied never fight back.

As for the media... I'd love to get my hands on the irresponsible bastards who go on and on and on about how the kid wore black or played videogames or listened to Judas Priest or played D&D and get medieval on his ass. I wore black too, and played games, and listened to heavy metal.

I didn't kill anybody though, and didn't even carry weapons. Why? My parents paid attention, even though half the time they blamed me for not "making more of an effort to fit in".

Quite frankly, I think that a child who's being abused has every right to kill his tormentor. Initiation of force, and all that, right? Quite frankly, I identify with Matthew Lovett, and with the Trench Coat Mafia, and with all the others. I'm just stronger than they are; I was able to fight back without giving in to my need to kill the fucking bastards.

I'm not strong enough to stop hating, though.

Just a couple of quick queries on home schooling for anyone who can answer them.

1) If you want to h/s your kids, are you required to go through a formal process to get the state to agree to this? If so, what is required of the homeschooling parent in terms of curriculum, specialist knowledge etc etc?

2) And how does the state know about your children in the first place? In other words, could you simply teach your kids at home without the state ever finding out? Do the authorities actually check up that every kid is enrolled in a school??

1) This should answer some of your questions:

2) Big Brother is watching! :-)

Even if state officials have no record of your children, you can bet that neighbours or other busybodies in your community will find it strange that your children never attend school, and will discuss their concerns with some authority.

Don't forget birth certificates. The state keeps records of all births and deaths within its jurisdiction, and can use that to determine who should be in prison.

Here are a few lessons to teach your children before sending them to school for the first time:

1) Think for yourself.
2) Trust no one; if you have even one true friend, you're lucky.
3) Those placed in authority over you are your enemy.
4) When bullied, go for the throat; they can't hurt you if they can't breathe.
5) Never start a fight, but if drawn into one make sure to win at any cost.
6) Make no excuses, ever.

Betty and Barry  Are you parents yet?  If you are unaware of that great friend of the Objectivists, David Weikart, unfortunately now deceased; please go to www.highscope.org  This Educational Research Foundation is based on teaching children to be free and autonomous from the beginning; as now their curricula include infants and toddlers. You have  the Khululeka Community Development Centre in Queenstown, Eastern Cape Province.  I hate to be making a commercial; but these people have the best interests of children at heart.  There is some good teaching everywhere; but High/Scope identifies the criteria; and develops teacher-training texts and videos that support and demonstrate active learning. All their materials are focused on developing the great teachers  that most of us longed for.  We are using this approach (at our expense) near Ntabankulu, Eastern  Cape. Working with these children and their materially impoverished preschool teachers and families is an energizing way  to spend our retirement years and pensions. One thing that home schooling a single child can't do; is to provide another child with which to reason and argue;  this is just one of  High/Scopes strengths.  Your grandchildren will thank you.

Reprising this is good - especially if coupling it to the latest John Stossel special of couple weeks ago dealing with the public school system....
