Will someone let me in on the code?

Barbara,

Two sides are debating who sent your e-mail.
George thinks it was someone from Firhammer's group while Alec believes it is one of Raimondo's friends.

The reasoning behind both is that they are considered to be homophobes.

Despite the trash and horrific insults he has blown at one, he also commited another error. He argues against collectivism and then presents his own case in form of collective idealising.
To call SOLO Bush-loving is showing that he has no idea what he is talking about.

Barbara I would wish you a SCUM-Filter for posts like this and I think this might not be the only one...

Barbara, do you have any specific ideas as to who might be the one? After all, one of the suspects once referred to you as "The Detective." :)

Alec

Help us out here.

One would almost think someone here did this, as a week-day joke to have us all play a 'who-dunnit' game - except it is so disguesting, only a perverted humorus would consider it as a joke.

Marcus, I did understand what you said -- but something more appears to be going on in code.

Alec, I haven't the beginning of an idea who the writer of the letter is.

Are you sure you aren't all looking for devious plots where there aren't any? It's written as a defense of Raimondo; I'd guess that that's just what it is. My detective abilities don't take me farther than that.

Max, I expect this won't be the last such letter I'll receive. I've been fortunate so far in my checkered career; I almost never get ugly letters -- I've received a couple at most over many years. But with Raimondo and phrends and the Valliant book due, that may well change.

It occurs to me that the real give away is the letter writer calling Stephen Schwartz a Trotskyite. I doubt that such an insult would ever occur to the phrends of phirehammer.

Linz, you must do something about that lisph. It's contagious.

Barbara,

I just got up and saw this... thing. Well, I started the day with a long laugh. I want to be outraged for you, but I can't stop laughing.

What jumped out at me was the Babs thing, but you already mentioned it. Still, I think it is indicative of where this guy is coming from.

Between the lines, sounds a lot like he wants to come out of the closet and can't find the door. Sort of like that Marine in American Beauty.

Michael, now that you mention it, the "Babs" thing is a clue. (Now I'm getting as conspiratorial as the rest of you.) No one who hadn't been following Solo -- which presumably excludes Raimondo and crew -- would know that I don't especially like that hideous, revolting, disgusting, offensive, ugly and insulting nickname. (Oh how I hope there's no one happily called "Babs" on Solo!)

Nothing like a little anti-Barbara venom and homophobia to start the morning!  I just hopped on and saw this.  I can see all of you West Coasters (and even further back in time zone, NZ's) have already picked it apart and responded.  I'd just like to add my voice to those expressing both disgust and humour at this idiot, and give my deepest, most heartfelt sympathies to Her Majesty for being addressed by the terrible title of "Babs."  The affront!

Was the name Paul Malloy in the e-mail address?

What was the e-mail address?

Marcus, the name was not in the e-mail address, but it appeared under the Details section of my emails. Probably Malloy didn't realize this.

I'd just as soon not announce his e-mail address.

Barbara,

I'd like to help unmask the slimeball. Could you forward the entire message, including the complete headers, to my areed2 address at calstatela.edu? Just save the message you received into a separate file, and send me e-mail with the file attached.

Linz (and others),

Could you retrieve any e-mail from the main suspects and send it to me, as above, for comparison of headers? And if you have anyone specific in mind but don't have e-mail from that person, send me what information you have?

What a nasty business :-(

Perhaps though that having so many running around like this trying to guess his identity is precisely what the creep wants?

Matthew,

"Perhaps though that having so many running around like this trying to guess his identity is precisely what the creep wants?"

Cockroaches prefer the darkness. This particular cockroach deserves to be brought into the light, if only for our amusement. If nothing else, future searches of this persons name, if he/she is discussed on solo, will turn up and reveal the type of character he/she really is. And hopefully, solo archives will outlive all of us. "Damned forever". I like that.

Quoth Barbara Branden:

"I've been fortunate so far in my checkered career; I almost never get ugly letters -- I've received a couple at most over many years. But with Raimondo and phrends and the Valliant book due, that may well change."

I'm not sure why you think that should be so.

Granted, Raimondo does take a "warts and all" approach to his writing which could rightly be considered "ugly" if he didn't carefully document damn near every comma.

And granted, many of the war advocates -- including especially Schwartz and, disturbingly, many here on SOLO -- have had a tendency to escalate personal ugliness in an attempt to deflect attention from their inability to win the war/anti-war debate on the basis of fact or defensible philosophical ideas.

In the main, however, most people aren't resorting to personal ugliness; nor are the bulk of those who are "Raimondo's phrends." So why do you expect a sudden change?

Regards,
Tom Knapp

Barbara,

Here is what I have learned so far - I still don't have anything from anyone for a comparison, so there is only so much I can do until I get some:

"Paul Malloy (paulyofcal@yahoo.com)"

is using Windows 2000 with MSIE_6, at IP address 64.81.67.230, which corresponds to dsl081-067-230.sfo1.dsl.speakeasy.net. That is, he is a speakeasy.net DSL customer in the San Francisco area. Windows 2000 was overpriced except for a deep discount for university faculty members, so the user probably either is on some faculty - or he/she bought a used computer from a university faculty member.

It is likely that the name "Paul Malloy" is a distractor - there are two well-known Libertarians of that name, one in Florida and one in Chicago, so this one, from San Francisco, may well be using a false flag.

Now that Adam Reed's on the case, an assuring level of technicality has been added to this investigation. Let me just concisely state the reasons for my theory that it was a Raimondoroid:

1. The word "trotskyite" (a favorite slur of his)
2. The word "soddomite" (go back to his few posts here, and you I think you'll find the same word used as a random slur)
3. The word "neocon" (which he and his ilk use to describe everybody they hate)
4. The venemous style is much more reminiscent of Rockwellites than anything I've seen of the phascists.

Of course, all of these could be cleverly inserted red herrings. And the prime phascist suspect's vile hatred for Barbara has led that suspect and her digital daddy to lose all sanity...

And before this I wasn't aware of (but am completely sympathetic with) Barbara's disgust for "Babs."

P.S. Barbara, there was no further code in those posts. It was all speculation as to whodunit, and there were references to Hercule Poirot and his sidekick, Captain Hastings.

Alec

Well, I'm sure Linz, when he wakes up, will be able to provide Raimondo's email (if not, I would think it's somewhere online), but we all know that he lives in San Francisco.
