Mr.Machan,
To have this article to wake up to as I watched  the sun come up is sublime. Thank you

One of favorite reference books is "The Society of Mind," by Marvin Minsky.

Marvin has one page titled "The Myth of the Third Alternative."   He draws a diagram(folks from MIT draw a lot of diagrams which is one reason I push LOGO in the homeschooling community) but Marvin's diagram has a big box labelled CAUSE, another CHANCE, and a much smaller one labelled FREE WILL.   He says we are always(as we learn about what really makes real people tick) taking things out of the FREE WILL box so it is getting smaller and smaller.

Another of my favorite authors on this issue is http://www.oliversacks.com/ .   I am reading his latest book now and as usual Oliver gives plenty of examples of folks who have been dealt very weird decks of cards.    Dale

I once corresponded with Oliver Sacks who told me that he believes that free will exists, although, of course, there are damaged folks who lack it.  But then some of us lack the capacity to see colors while most of us do not.  As to that box marked "free will" that's shrinking, I wonder whether the author is free to decide what goes into it, what is to be removed.

1)  Reminds me of a FOR BETTER OR WORSE comic by Lynn Johnston, 7/22/88.

Two boys(a. and b.) walking along talking with their hands in their pockets:

a. Summer camp!  They've gone and put us in summercamp.  Man What a bummer!

a.  I mean, if it was like the movies, it'd be a blast!  Like, you know "meatballs" and stuff like that!

a.  But it's gonna be dull man!  Why can't life be like it is in the movies?  Why is real life so x#@& dull?!!

b.  ...I guess it's 'cause we hafta be our own writers.

2)  When I earned my BS/EE degree in Boulder in 1957 I signed on at the National Bureau of Standards to spend a year in Antarctica doing "science" during the International Geophysical Year.

Boarded http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Wyandot_(AKA-92)
about Thanksgiving sailing to Africa, across the Equator, and into the ice.

About a week after leaving Norfolk I was studying in my upper bunk and wrote in my diary:
"I don't know if I have Free Will but life will be more interesting and enjoyable if I assume I do."

And that has made all the difference.    Dale

Tibor,

This is a beautiful presentation, as well as insightful, and helpful.
