What are people's takes on this group?  The contradiction is obvious to even the least astute political observer: gay people are choosing a political party with an obviously anti-gay plank, even with the option of viable alternative party that (at least nominally/partially) seeks to protect certain rights of theirs.  It seems to me that economics or military policy issues (or in many cases, both, perhaps) are the main drivers for this voting block.

I would guess that many of them are successful in business and free enterprise, and have money they rightfully want to protect.  They realize that the freedom gained through producing and keeping wealth far outweighs (at least for them)the comparatively increased economic liberty curtailment which is part of the Left wing package deal.  I suspect LCR's recognize the negative impact of the Left's general 'victim peddling' for what it is, and reject it.  I imagine many of them probably are libertarians at heart, but they don't support the Libertarian party because they don't think it could ever win, and if anything they would take votes away from a viable Republican option.  (Perhaps full drug legalization is problematic for many of them as well).  Or, in recent years especially, perhaps they also disagree with the Middle East non-interventionism which has seemed to characterize Libertarians as a whole.  I wonder if any of them are religious?  If there are any, I imagine they posess more of a 'soft' spirituality/traditionalist appeal rather than firebrand fundamentalism.

I'm sure there are many more complexities to this movement that I am overlooking, but I'm wondering if there is anyone who can either confirm or debunk my broad strokes characterization?  Anyone ever actually met any of these folks?  It seems to me that there could even be a few lurking at a site like SOLO...please chime in if you're around...

I've never met one but I generally don't congregate with gay's, not cause its bad or anything and I don't abscribe to the notion that every gay person is looking to score but honestly, the mere chance that I may be looked at sexually by another man is personally abhorrent to me. Naturally I'm here so I have no problems talking with them but my point is, like a lot of people I don't have much experience with them.

That said, I'd imagine their Repblicans for the same reason I am, they are the party that is most in line with my beliefs (Libertarians are close but I think having balls is an important platform plank). They disagree with Republicans gay issues, but support a lot of the rest. If you support the war or any decent foreign policy, where else is there to go in America?

from http://online.logcabin.org/about/  (which is also a redirect from www.logcabin.org/ Google returns several state organizations as well.  There is no shortage of information here.   And by the way, thanks for metioning this.  I had no idea that these people existed.  This can be helpful to me here in Ann Arbor.)

What we believe
We are loyal Republicans. We believe in low taxes, limited government, strong defense, free markets, personal responsibility, and individual liberty. Log Cabin represents an important part of the American family-taxpaying, hard working people who proudly believe in this nation's greatness. We also believe all Americans have the right to liberty, freedom, and equality. Log Cabin stands up against those who preach hatred and intolerance. We stand up for the idea that all Americans deserve to be treated equal-regardless of their sexual orientation.

Why we exist
The mere existence of our organization recognizes the fact that the Republican Party still has a long way to go on issues affecting gay and lesbian civil rights. In recent years, the GOP has made important strides toward inclusion, however much more must be done. Too many people in the party remain hostile to gay and lesbian civil rights. Log Cabin will confront the radical right's bigotry head-on as we join the majority of Republicans who believe inclusion wins.

(Then there is the  theory that this was cooked up by people out to destroy the Republican party by infiltrating it.)

(Also: sorry about the boldface type, also the green. The cutting and pasting did that.)

Pete, from what I've heard within gay social circles and in gay publications, you've got it right, particularly with the above, and also with the removed focus on religious fundamentalism and enhanced focus on personal spirituality.

The excerpts Michael posted seem to back this up.

There are a few other thoughts I have.  For one, it gives me hope in politics, because LCR seem to have "gotten" (as an organization) the idea that socially liberal and fiscally conservative is not a contradictory combination.  Also, when they refused, as an organization, to support Bush in 2004 because of his proposed marriage amendment it established them as more than a Republican "me-too" group intent on never sowing discord.  Although I (and I'm sure many LCRs) personally voted for Bush, it was important as an organization not to let the amendment issue be swept aside.

I'll let you guys know if I actually get in contact with any of these guys.

Jason
