Many of my posts have been critical of ARI or TOC of other aspects of the Objectivist Movement or of how Objectivists often behave or think. Or even of details of how summer conferences I've attended are run.

But I want to urge people to attend a summer conference. Both ARI and TOC put on very large conferences with over a hundred people. And that is a good thing, because it gives you a wide spectrum of people to meet and lectures to attend. I've always found time after time that new and interesting issues are presented by lively and well-prepared speakers. And the problem of negativity, of fights, of Objectivists with poor social skills has not been present there. If you want to have a few laughs or listen to music or hang out with fun people, that can be one of the best parts...the evenings.

(You'll have long days. And build up a bit of a sleep debt, there will be so much to learn and do, so many people to talk to. But, hey, you've got the rest of the year to recover.)

Objectivist conferences act as a filtering mechanism: The best people (who tend to be more organized and serious, able to plan ahead and afford a weeklong conference, have their lives in better order) tend to come. The cranks tend to stay away. People are in a good mood. Starting with the wonderful Jefferson School and on to today, many times I've left a summer conference having had one of the best weeks of my life. Meeting great people, old friends. Having fun and being silly. Learning things. A taste of Atlantis. For someone often critical of Oists and our movement, this is especially life-giving and refreshing to me...like a huge weight lifted away. And precious days of sunlight coming in.

The deadlines for the summer conferences are near.

Waah!!  I guess I'm not "the best people".   (Maybe one day I'll have my life in better order, but alas, not this year!)

Well, no. I said 'tend'. It was a rough generalization. You're among the best people in my book. :-)

What is the count on the TOC seminar this year, Phil? How many people?

We're pushing 150, as in the past. While we've officially closed out registration (this is Wednesday, June 27) some late registrations are still drifting in. So Laure, if you want to call us, it's still not too late! You too Phil!

Ed, has the full scholarship for the Naked Dancer And Elvis Impersonator been filled?

Phil, looking for a freebee: "Ed, has the full scholarship for the Naked Dancer And Elvis Impersonator been filled?" Phil, I'm not optimistic about your getting the Naked Dancer scholarship. If I'm not mistaken, Pink Snow has that one locked up, although I'm sure it wasn't for want of applicants, as nakedness is no stranger to Objectivism.

There was a whole contingent of naked Objectivists at the Thomas Jefferson School Conference back in 1985, no doubt taking their cue from Howard Roark and, dare I say, Leonard Peikoff, who declared that, unlike the Christians, we should have no objection to public nudity, for we are the spiritual successors of the ancient Greeks, who view the human body not as a source of shame but as an object of reverence.

The site of this grand unveiling was Black's Beach, a stone's throw from U.C. San Diego, where the conference was being held. I ought to know, I was there, and, shorn of my proper attire, felt "as free as a barn swallow" (if you remember the Washington Mutual commercial). Of course, I was enticed there by the prospect of seeing one of the conference attendees (or at least her natural endowments!).

Sadly, it was the last time I would see George Walsh, who was the only speaker to take Peikoff's recommendation seriously. (Even Peikoff didn't adhere it, as he was there under cover of swimsuit. Easier to preach the gospel of shameless nudity than to practice it.) I must say, however, that having witnessed le Objectivist au naturale, I think that, with certain exceptions, I prefer the artificial version -- you know, the one with all of those wonderful "man-made" garments that leave something to the imagination?

So, Phil, don't get any ideas! Perhaps the Elvis Impersonator scholarship is still open.

That coward.

I would've done it. I don't believe there are many things more liberating.

Erica

Unfortunately, as I am not much of a dancer, I cannot apply for the Naked Dancer scholarship, alas.

 :-(

Erica, we don't care if you can dance. We just want to see the audition. :)

No offense to George - who was one of my favorite all-time Objectivists - but he was one of the last Jefferson School attendees I would have liked to see naked.

Sorry Phil, Pink would get the that prize!

Black's Beach by the way has firm sand, not rocky, and easy to walk on. It's at a cliff off of which gliders launch themselves over the beach and land again on the cliffs. Rather neat!
