| | http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/hall/newfullstory.asp?ID=115591 This was discussed today on KPFK's Digital Village today... In other news of a similar vien, also from Digital Village: http://www.switched.com/2007/08/02/chinese-video-game-kills-corrupt-politicians/ or, http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2007/08/03/1185648104916.html Now if someone would just translate that to Spanish for Santa Ana... Or Mexico.
And, on a somewhat related note: (from a message I posted on a locally-based Furry group)
Achtung! Atención! Attention! Furries into 2nd Life, expecially the design/career end:
www.evryx.com
www.mamoca.com - http://www.mamoca.com/movie_3.html
These are a couple of new local - Santa Ana area - startups with Venture Capital funding who are doing things directly relevant to the furry scene. Each of these companies was featured with over a page of coverage in the Marketplace section of the OC Register in the past couple weeks. I spoke to the CEOs of both companies and they seemed really sharp and with it. Each of these companies potentially represents major opportunity for people such as furries who are into graphics, animation, avatars, etc.
Evryx has a system by which you can either enter a photo online and see if there is a match to it, using high-power image recognition tech on the Evryx server, or submit a photo so that other people can do the same. This includes pictures of people's faces, but is designed to allow a match to trigger a link, as to a marketing site or database.
However, the software is in place for you to also do the same from your picture cellphone! So, in theory, you could snap a pic of someone who looked attractive, dangerous, whatever, and get back a link to the actual identity of the person - or at least how to email them, assuming a match.
For more info on the likely future of this tech, you may want to read HUGO Award Winning Vernor Vinge's new novel "Rainbows End." (and, yes, there is no apostrophe in Rainbows.)
MaMoCa is a totally different tech, which uses a projected light grid at about 1cm per grid space to directly substitute for the marker system used for 3D motion capture for movies such as Lord of the Rings - e.g., Golum. MaMoCa can generate the wireframe 3D model in realtime at high res. When I spoke to the CEO last week, he said that it should be online for use in generating avatars and other objects in Second Life and other similar environments within a year.
Meanwhile, as both these companies are raw startups - especially MaMoCa, which I think has been pretty much a one-man show - there is a major potential for employment by either of them as well as for Beta Testors and anciliary product development. Those with experience in 2nd Life, or software development, or graphic art may want to contact these companies. The CEO of MaMoCa said that he is very interested in getting qualified Beta Testors for his 3D capture/modeling system. Getting in the door now could pay off bigtime.
Mention me if you want, as I think I got off on the right foot this time with these guys: Phil Osborn
