On a side note, just watched Beowulf. Funny to see a story taking place circa 500 AD. At one point, a character played by John Malcovich asked the King (Anthony Hopkins) if they should start praying to the "new" god: Christ Jesus.
The King said gods won't do for men what men can't already do for themselves. He said, instead, that they needed a (human) hero.
That human hero was Beowulf, who slew a demon and became King himself. In late life, he complained that there were no more heroes left, that it was because the new Christ god had turned men into guilty, shameful, self-loathing cowards and martyrs.
Funny how much they knew then ...
