Over the years here on RoR, I have resisted and opposed the easy swipes at everyone's new favorite bogeyman, Islam. Having Muslims to kick around sure takes the heat off of our Christian neighbors. In another thread, I reviewed a teaching session with the Dalai Lama. Somehow I forgot to denounce him as an anti-materialist... I mean, he was such a nice guy, so happy.... About a decade ago, one of my co-workers said that with my skill at philosophy it was something of a loss that I did not become a Jesuit. I took that as a compliment. The thing is that I have no cultural context for Islam. I am not alone in that. People here who feel (I stress that: "feel") that Christianity is not as destructive as Islam base their affinity only on exposure, rather than logic.

In the current (May 2008) issue of The New Invididualist, Diane West alludes to the mass denial of any cultural conflict between Western civilization and Islam. Also, Bruce Thornton's nod to Lee Harris (Civilization and Its Enemies) makes the same point in greater detail. One of the things I learned in an anthropology class is that it is a fallacy to see "primitive" societies as "evolving" into modern ones. Non-industrial people are who and what they are. We are who and what we are. Our cultures are different -- and, yet, in many ways very similar else why would the band play Hail to the Chief for the President? -- but their cultures are deeply rooted. Moreover, it is also a fallacy to see indigenous people with some customs or folkways and declare that they have always been this way. For them, five or six generations is pretty close to "forever." Cultures change.

Very few of the places on the Earth where large percentages of the humans practice the Islamic religion as an element of their local cultures can be transformed into American suburbs. They do not need to be. A hundred years ago, Herbert Spencer pointed out that both assertions are true that society is stable and that society changes.

Changing Islamic Africa seems not as important as fighting the Taliban. However, this is where the next Taliban is coming from.

As a secular society, however, China offers a lot possibilities for Americanization of which that link is but a glimpse of things to come.

Where America has been most successful is in bringing from those cultures their own special individuals -- the independent, the opportunist, the non-conformist, the adventurist -- and letting them find their own spaces and places here.

However, for every action... One of the factors in the European Wars of the 20th century was that America drained off Europe's special individuals, leaving behind the tribalists. Today, as TNI via Thornton via Harris points out, the tribalists rule where Islam flourishes. So, it is no surprise that the threat to us (to me and to you) comes from them. Europe has been bled dry. They are still not our friends. (Oddly enough, the former East Germany holds some promise for Objectivists.) Europeans simply lack the will to do much of anything about their animosities.

Islam will be a threat -- bigger and worse -- for a generation or two. The outcome is not certain. What is certain is that there are some interesting features of Islam that allow incursions of Western ideology. Exploiting them to our benefit (mine and also yours) is a challenge that must be accepted if we are not be swept aside.

You do not need to read much world history to know that sometimes, the good guys lose.

Having Muslims to kick around sure takes the heat off of our Christian neighbors.

It's been quite a few years since "our Christian neighbors" have engaged in wholesale genocide on any scale that rivals what we've seen from Muslims of late (but don't count them out -- they may simply be in a slump). In fact, "everyone's favorite bogeymen" have been responsible for more than 10,000 fatal attacks since 9/11. Here's a list that covers just the past two months:

Hmmm... Could it be that Islam is everyone's favorite boogeyman for a reason?

Moreover, it is also a fallacy to see indigenous people with some customs or folkways and declare that they have always been this way. For them, five or six generations is pretty close to "forever." Cultures change.

The fallacy is that Islamic "culture" will change as it integrates itself with other cultures. Look at the European nations that have ever-increasing Islamic populations and you'll find tons of evidence to the contrary.

Islam will be a threat -- bigger and worse -- for a generation or two. The outcome is not certain. What is certain is that there are some interesting features of Islam that allow incursions of Western ideology. Exploiting them to our benefit (mine and also yours) is a challenge that must be accepted if we are not be swept aside.

Those features, if indeed they exist, have been pretty impervious to outside influences over the past 1400 or so years. Not sure why we should expect this to change in a few generations.

As a secular society, however, China offers a lot possibilities for Americanization of which that link is but a glimpse of things to come.

As secular societies, Communist China and the former USSR were responsible for nearly 100,000,000 deaths during the 20th century (neither as a result nor in spite of being secular societies). Not sure why China's secular society makes it any more or less open to "Americanization".

I'm generally put off by the way many in our circles generalize all who claim to follow Islam.

Islam may (politically correct) have some very strong anti-capitalist anti-religious freedom content... but I'd argue that its not so much the religion that's the problem but the actual vandals and murderers combined with our lack of retribution to those who have attacked us.

I don't care much about groups of monkeys fighting each other in the Congo. But if the monkeys come here to pick a fight with me or those I do business with then its a big problem.

Face it, there are always going to be people around who can't figure out for themselves what is true or what is in their self interest. There is a huge variance in both genetic/physical mental abilities and in personal motivation for such mental affairs. So lots of people will get stupid ideas like killing a bunch of people will grant a great "after life" or some other goal/planning monstrosity. We will just have to defend ourselves.

I do not think that "Islam" or "The Koran" is the most terrible religion around and that anyone who believes it is terrible. Instead I identify certain thoughts that I highly disagree with ad certain behaviors that I would much prefer were not acted out.

Just a thought, Teressa. Last night at the OC Science Fiction Club's Writers' Group, we analyzed a short story by one of our members focussing on an adolescent's experience of moving to a moon base to join his mother. In the discussion that followed, I suddenly realized that one of the major problems for such a kid, especially a couple of decades or more downstream, would be light-lag.

The typical American teen today is already spending huge amounts of time online and in Virtual worlds, such as Final Fantasy or World of Warcraft, or 2nd Life, etc. Probably many kids have most of their friend from these virtualities.

However, a ~3second time lag makes real-time interaction virtually impossible, and there's no way around it.

So, we humans will undergoe an interesting involuntary segmentation as we move off this ball of rock...

The claim that good Muslims prove Islam is not wicked is like the claim that good bureaucrats prove that government intervention is not wrong. If you have the right people in the spots all will work out well, that is, until someone else fills the spot for a time.

As for the followers of Islam, I am in total agreement with you Serravillo. We have probably only seen the beginning of the danger they pose. The question that keeps rattling around in my head is how to deal with this danger? Do we kill them? Do we arrest them? Do we educate them? Do we isolate them?

What can one nation/culture do against millions who want to destroy it?

The only real differences between right-wing Christian-Identity groups, Neo-Nazis/Skinheads, various leftist guerilla groups -- and even street gangs, for that matter -- and Islamic terror organizations are sheer size, funding and support. Funding and support come not only from Islamic nations and wealthy, spoiled-rotten brats like bin Laden and his ilk, but from individual Muslims worldwide, who also swell the ranks of individual groups. But those differences give Islamists an "edge" with regard to power and effect that the other groups could never hope to attain. And for that reason, Islamic terror organizations (currently) pose a greater threat than all of the other groups combined, a fact that is born out by a comparison of the number and severity of attacks by the various groups over the past 20 years.

Not to mention the fact that, among these groups Islamist organizations are the only ones who stand any chance of obtaining nuclear or significant quantities of chemical or biological weapons.

Mr. Gores brought up a good point: How many members of a group must engage in a particular behavior before it's okay to attribute that behavior to membership in the group? I recently read that there were an estimated 1.3 billion Muslims in the world. Even of only 10-20 percent sympathize with and/or take active part terrorist activities, that's 130 - 260 million people, terrorists or potential terrorists all. I find it very difficult to believe that the common thread that binds all of these people -- their religion -- is somehow not a significant determining factor with regard to their bad behavior.

By the way, if the 10-20% seems high, remember that the largest Muslim populations live in Islamic states or nations where Islam is the state religion. These folks tend toward the more radical end of the spectrum, as opposed to Muslims who've emigrated to the U.S. who might be somewhat more moderate in their behavior (if not their views).

The question that keeps rattling around in my head is how to deal with this danger? Do we kill them? Do we arrest them? Do we educate them? Do we isolate them?

The only realistic way to manage this threat is to treat it as a doctor would treat a incurable, chronic illness. Monitor it closely, deal aggressively with acute symptoms as they arise and institute an overall treatment plan that keeps the disease from progressing. I suppose that emcompasses all of the things you mentioned.

Or you could just nuke all Islamic nations and large Muslim populations, but even I don't think that's a good idea.

There is a lot of stuff on the internet, and not all of it reliable, so it helps to provide a reference so people can judge for themselves the credibility of the source. I don't even bother sending Snopes links in response to forwards I get from co-workers anymore (remember when Bill Gates was giving everyone who forwarded a certain email $10,000? I've seen that one around (again) recently...). Also, just my two cents, copying and pasting that much data into a post might seem like an attempt to overwhelm with sheer numbers rather than rationally debate.

Now we get into the silly notions of 'just war theory' and rules of engagement. Either our government has been so totally bamboozled by the PC crowd that we can't fight an effective war or they don't really want us to win this fight. I'm inclined to think both.

If Muslims simply stayed home and off'd each other, we wouldn't be having this discussion. But such is obviously not the case.

No. It would not be appropriate to exclude those murders. Since most if not all of those killings Summer listed were murders committed in the name of Islam. It's not just any arbitrary murders, but murders committed by Islamic extremists in the name of their twisted religion.

Well what ARE your words Jonathan? Care to state a position? Summer is addressing the dangers of Christianity vis a vis Islam in present day, so, what do you think? Should we be more concerned with Christian extremists or Islamic extremists?
