Now that the political wrangling has started in an effort to prevent another AWB becoming law, I've created a nice poster that's guaranteed to catch the eye. It features a likeness of an M16, with the text "Secure the right to own assault weapons - because the next War of Independence won't be fought with muskets".

It's available here on BureauCrash, or here on my personal homepage.

To "neo-liberals"?? Sorry to be a bit of a pedant here, but I think you just mean "liberals". I would think neo-liberals tend to be in favour of gun rights, although probably quite haphazardly.

I would say neo-liberals are really just classical liberals with a heavy dose of Hayek. Taken together with "neo-conservatives" they form what is known as the New Right, something which I've never believed Rand's thought is a part of, though superficial analyses may lump her in with the same crowd.

By 'neo-liberals' I mean socialist creatures that call themselves liberal, but in fact are nothing like classical liberals. E.g. the kind of 'liberals' who would see firearm ownership prohibited, or restrictions on speech imposed by law.

Duncan,

It is not a good idea to use a common term with a specific referent in reality to refer to something other than what it is already being used for. Google "neo-liberal." You will find that it designates, in current European discourse, a classical liberalism informed by American libertarianism, and therefore more coherent than old classical liberalism used to be. For example, Poland's president Kwasniewski's policies are usually described in European media as "neo-liberal." If you use it to mean the opposite, you will be misunderstood.

Indeed - I was unaware of that connotation. I will speak with Joe regarding changing the wording in the news article.

Duncan,

I really appreciate your posting this. I think we are not the only ones who notice Objectivists do not seem to appreciate the significance of the 2nd Amendment and of guns in the history and and culture of a free society.

With that in mind, and in your honor, I just posted my latest article from The Autonomist, Guns, Security, and the Three Ps.

Now, I have a question about your poster. If you are interested in promoting it I would be glad to help you do that on The Autonomist. (By the way, the image for you poster does not show up on BureauCrash. At least it didn't for me. It might have something to do with the PDF format.)

Thanks Duncan!

Regi

Regi,

I'm glad you appreciate the poster. Ironically, the M16 *isn't* classed as an assault weapon under the old AWB, it's classed as a *machine gun*, if you can believe that!

I picked the M16 (and am sticking with it) as it's the most immediately recognisable assault rifle (*despite* what the law says), second only to the AK47, but without the unpleasant communist / Islamic fundamentalist associations people have with the latter weapon.

W.r.t. the preview on BureauCrash - yes, their site has problems auto-generating previews, for reasons I haven't quite fathomed, as many of their PDF documents have perfectly fine previews. It might be that I generated my PDF with OpenOffice rather than Acrobat Distiller, but that's simply a guess based on the only obvious difference.

W.r.t. promoting the poster - thank you, I would be greatful for any exposure you could give to it & the idea it expresses. I think one of the greatest problems amongst RKBA advocates is a tendency towards compromise. Too few people say "I support the RKBA to defend myself and my property from others, and to make any future despot think twice about imposing his will on me." Too many are prepared to accept compromise after compromise in order to prevent the Government disarming them totally.

Of course, that's from an American perspective - here in New Zealand (do I take too keen an interest in American politics for one who doesn't live there? :-) we have no RKBA - being armed is a privilege dispensed by the Government, and while technically legal, use of a firearm in self-defense practically guarantees you'll never be permitted to own one again, assuming you avoid a jail sentence that is. Certainly, no civilian is allowed to carry arms on his or her person. The Libertarianz are the only political party I know of that advocate the RKBA; even ACT only seem to be backing gun owners from a sporting perspective.

Anyway, now that we (myself & my fiancee Andelys) have our own house, we are renovating it, and as soon as it is sufficiently secure & presentable (for a Police officer will likely be inspecting my premises) I will be applying for a firearms license here in New Zealand - definitely before the next election, in case we're lumped with a Labour Government again, whose 'Minister of Disarmament' (at least they're honest) is a Quaker, fer crying out loud!

The stupidity of the whole licensing system is highlighted by the fact that I enjoy & have been hunting and target-shooting with a variety of firearms owned by others in their presence - the license merely gives me the right to *own* such weapons.

Should I want to own *pistols*, I have to get an endorsement on my license, join a pistol club (for target shooting is the only legally justifiable use for a pistol in NZ), and keep my first pistol on club premises for a number of months before I'm allowed to bring it home!

Furthermore, myself & my fiancee already posess a number of weapons including knives, daggers, swords (ranging from a court-sword to a full-sized two-handed sword) and an air-pistol and air-rifle - one closet in our hallway is already our dedicated 'arsenal' closet, and the second is likely to have a gunsafe installed in it once I have my license.

All of these weapons can legally be owned by anyone over the age of 18, just not carried in public. Potential tools like folding pocket knives occupying a grey area, which is why they're my weapon of choice for self-defense when out of the house.

Perhaps we need a SOLO Weapons forum! :-)
