| | Yes and no. First, many Europeans (beside our ignorance to our own demise (EU)) see the US as a nation on the downfall to fascism and totalitarianism (not only the Raich case and such). We see that China has developed itself in a nation of economic success and Europeans believe that in a few decades, we will see the rise of a liberal China, because wealth will bring more rights for the people. Also, China is more sympathic because it does what the US has lost: The Isolationist policy.
Also, the European economic hopes rest more with the Chinese than the US, notable the weak US dollar and the destructive deficit.
Also, you have to understand that the European nations are still proud of their independency and they have come to the conclusion that the US not always treats former allies very good (what great examples are there: Iraq :) ). And last but not least, it is the great socialist legacy of Central Europe that drives them towards China rather than the US.
At least, this is what I could decypher through the media. It is a cultural, but also a economic-political problem or event...
