Yes and no. First, many Europeans (beside our ignorance to our own demise (EU)) see the US as a nation on the downfall to fascism and totalitarianism (not only the Raich case and such).
We see that China has developed itself in a nation of economic success and Europeans believe that in a few decades, we will see the rise of a liberal China, because wealth will bring more rights for the people. Also, China is more sympathic because it does what the US has lost: The Isolationist policy.

Also, the European economic hopes rest more with the Chinese than the US, notable the weak US dollar and the destructive deficit.

Also, you have to understand that the European nations are still proud of their independency and they have come to the conclusion that the US not always treats former allies very good (what great examples are there: Iraq :) ). And last but not least, it is the great socialist legacy of Central Europe that drives them towards China rather than the US.

At least, this is what I could decypher through the media. It is a cultural, but also a economic-political problem or event...

I prefer the United States to other allies and China.  Envy is the main motivator with these people.  They want to see us fall in hopes it will make them look better by comparison.

What would you think, when a president of a superpower proclaims that he will bring peace, freedom and democracy?

Then you see a war against Iraq, an Iraq raped by never-ending conflicts and on irony note, the start of abolishment of privacy and property rights. Do you think this shows a consistent philosophy of freedom? Don't you think the other countries will see the US as a hypocrite?

Well, better an inconsistent philosophy of freedom than a consistent philosophy of tyranny and murder. Better a country of mixed premises than a country whose premises are thoroughly statist.

At the moment my personal opinion on the future of freedom in Europa is not a very positive one.
