Michael, this post is too disgusting to sanction, so I have sanctioned a random past post of yours.

Ted,

I miss the logic in that.

I might say that your response, as most people have, is one of the reasons why we have the problem culturally. The ostrich's head in the sand; kill the messenger, and etc.

America and England are the biggest consumers and exporters of Postmodern art. It would be rather odd to act as if it didn't exist, or that it wasn't a significant reflection on our culture's state of health.

Yale has tremendous influence in the postmodern art world. Barney (google him), for example.

Not to be a downer, I think it is very healthy to see negative things clearly.

Stuff like that, and from creeps like Habacuc (who's probably a serial murderer wannabe), gives me nightmares. Seriously.  I don't watch horror movies for the same reason.

How is it possible to overcome the sheer revulsion to even begin to "understand" that shit?

The problem is that sanctions have multiple possible interpretations: read this, I approve, I agree with you, I disagree but appreciate the effort.

I don't like horror movies either, but someone might write a good review of one. I wouldn't want to sanction the review not due to the effort but due to the subject matter. Think of it that way. I'm open to further criticism.

Ted: "I don't like horror movies either, but someone might write a good review of one. I wouldn't want to sanction the review not due to the effort but due to the subject matter. Think of it that way. I'm open to further criticism."

You both missed my intended point. Say an evil person had influence over some aspect of your life, say your kid has an Yale art professor? I think it would be wise to understand how that person works, how the situation came to be, and what you can do about it. No?

Understanding both how good and bad ideas shape a culture is a good thing. If one only understands the good ideas, I am afraid they can readily fall victim to the bad.

American needs to become much more streetwise in regards to culture.

Stephen Hicks sent me the link to an amusing Iowahawk post related to this issue: http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/2008/04/close-cover-bef.html

"But I can hardly draw a stick man! How can this miracle program work for me?

"That's the beauty of the Yale Art School system! Our certified instructors will teach you through our exclusive DYNAMIC TRANSGRESSION™ method. Old fashioned art instruction systems focus on boring repetition, but Yale's DT™ eliminates all the frustration and suicidal tendencies. No more messy brushes, sticky clay, or expectation of talent! All you need is bodily fluids and an insane desire for attention."

In real life I have a friend/acquaintance here in NY, he has a MFA from Yale. He pretty much confirms the Iowahawk satirical blog post. I asked if he would like to join my life drawing group on Sundays and he told me that he couldn't draw the figure. In the same breadth he equated the skill to draw with being an artist for hire.

It may seem odd but with his last comment he pretty much summed up a prominent division in the art world: classical craftsmen that do lots of work for hire vs. postmodernists that don't.

I hope it is clear to everyone here that those are false alternatives. The positive alternative is for artists to excel at technical skills and create from their souls.

Had you entitled the link The Unmitigated Evil of "Between Art and the Human Body" I would have sanctioned it without hesitation. But had I sanctioned that link as posted someone not paying attention might just have thought "cool link!"

Michael, I don't think I've missed your intended point at all.

Ted,

I understand your point about the title. I will keep it in mind the next time a post a news item.
