I love how super computers keep pushing the limits of computing power all the time. Some of it is very useful for things like better simulations and others for working on mathematical problems like the Riemann Zeta Hypothesis. All in all, it's all good clean nerdy fun. :)

In mathematician Rudy Rucker's cyberpunk novels Software and Wetware, the non-asimovian robots in Luna evolved from petaflop 'bots to femtoflop.  Of course, it was a smaller package in the stories, but the processing technology is here and now for true standalone artificial intelligence.

What go my attention was that these are flops: not just "operations" but floating point operations.  Time was when I was young, you needed a special program or firmware for floating point.  The future unfolds.
