No - mysticism covers, not joins.

Funny. Aren't most of us here "joined" and "united" by our rational self interest to both better understand reality and to socialize with other people who think for themselves?

Okay fellas--while you both are right--you've both seemed to read a meaning into this quote that was not Szasz' intent. Szasz was reacting to folks who subvert their own responsibility for living as a human qua human (see my other Szasz quote for perspective here).

I agree that it can be the case that "mysticism joins and unites", but surely reason does too. Going along with the quote, could you imagine a song that glorifies the virtue of selfishness? Now, how about a song that glorifies something we all love (which may not exist)?

Dean,

" could you imagine a song that glorifies the virtue of selfishness?"

How about a poem? I've always loved "for any ruffian of the sky" by ee cummings.

The end of it:
"

true to his mate his chicks his friends
he loves because he cannot fear
(you see it in the way he stands
and looks and leaps upon the air)

"

Dean, there is "ANTHEM" by Rush:

"I know they always told you selfishness was wrong,
But it was for me, not you, that I came to write this song."

Or, more to the spirit of the quote:

"We can walk our roads together
if our goals are all the same,
We can run alone and free
if we pursue a different aim.
Let the truth of love be lighted,
Let the love of truth shine clear...
with the heart and mind united in a single, perfect sphere."

How about - 'I did it my way'?
The ultimate theme song.  I get goosebumps every time I hear Frankie-baby sing it.

Frank Sinatra's "I did it my way" is sublime.

Just some trivia for you. The music was originally taken from a French song with words put to it different than the original French version.

Amazingly, none other than David Bowie was first asked to come up with English lyrics for it. Needless to say, his love song lyrics were rejected.

Joe Maurone, I really like your second quote, thanks.

I like "My Way" too : ).
