"I am willing to go to jail rather than fill out another 1040."

That is increidbly brave, of both you, and of Brian. If I were to do something like that, in order that I am not quietly eliminated by the Feds, I would be making as much noise about it as posible, like the 'zero return' guy is doing.

Thomas L. Knapp said:  “I certainly don't disagree with the course of action that you state you'd take. Hell, I'm somewhat in that same boat already.”

Outstanding Tom.  FINALLY, someone who both reads Rand and APPLIES what he’s learned (rather than most on this forum who seem to just want to talk and split hairs over $3 words).  I can’t tell you what a breath of fresh air that is for me.  I’ve been looking everywhere for individuals who have read Rand and take action.  I came to this forum thinking that I’d find them here.  Instead, I’ve found a fair amount of useless discussion, socialism, and limited to no action.  (Where’s the forum of individuals who’ve read Rand and take real action to apply what they’ve learned?)

Thomas L. Knapp said:  “On the other hand, Rand drew a distinction between reluctantly acquiescing, especially under direct coercion, to something one opposes and actually sanctioning that thing.”

Absolutely she did.  You don’t have to look any further than Atlas Shrugged.  John Galt’s capture was a perfect portrayal of that.  If you put a gun to my head, I will likely DO as you say; however, putting a gun to my head will not force me to think what you want.  But that’s not what I’m reading (for the most part) on this topic.  I’m reading that “some,” because they don’t have enough self-esteem to stand up to these terrorist goons, fraudulently attempt to protect their limited self-esteems by rationalizing direct theft… or pretending that they are individuals who take action, only to be discouraged when the opinions of OTHERS don’t agree.  I don’t know how else to look at that but sanctioning it.  One guy in this thread claimed he went to my Web site and did the “research” I’d suggested, and then claimed I was battling windmills.  From reading your article, you know the research that it takes to learn what we’ve learned (if I remember correctly, it took me about 6 months to validate everything).

Thomas L. Knapp said:  “This being an Objectivist forum, I can hardly find fault with members of it for taking a position that seems to be at least arguably in line with Objectivist ideas when it comes to "acquiescence" versus "sanction.”

Gosh darn it – say it ain’t so.  Please tell me that the relatively few people who post on this forum do not represent “Objectivist ideas.”  Please tell me that this isn’t what people believe The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged propound.  Please tell me that the socialistic jokers and “individualists” who care what others think aren’t truly representative of Rand’s ideals.

Then again, I’m not one who ever fakes reality.  If this is it, then Rand was wrong about one very important theory:  we live in a malevolent world.  I’m not yet convinced.

Oh no you don’t.  Remember – you said we’re fighting windmills, right?  Danger Will Robinson – you’re self-esteem is showing.

When you’re ready to face-up to/take on your self-esteem issue, you feel free to reach out to inquire what you can do (I don’t mean to speak for Tom, but I’ll bet he’d point you in the right direction as well).  I don’t get offended, and I never disregard people who are willing to do their own work.  (Besides, you don’t strike me as a socialist – I still think you’re making an error of knowledge rather than a breach of morality based on your posts.)

I understand how and why people protect their limited self-esteems.  I also understand that hundreds of millions of low self-esteems are the reason we’re having a conversation about federally funded stem-cell research.

Brian:

I think anyone who refuses to pay Federal income tax is brave. I also think that anyone who fails to pay Federal income tax is incredibly foolhardy, given what can happen to you. I am not willing to give up my freedom for "no reason," which is what, in my estimation, you and Thomas are doing. In my estimation, a few non-paying citizens will either be largely ignored (ie, no systemic change accomplished), or, if they DO become a problem, they will have assets frozen, credit ruined, and will end up in jail (ie, no systemic change accomplished). As an attorney, I can also lose my license to practice law, in which I have invested about $100k. The risk is not worth the reward. Rational individualists do this sort of figuring before buying a horse and tilting at windmills.

I wished you luck in your tilting at the Illinois Family law windmill because you are obviously emotionally invested in winning equal rights to your child. It is a sensitive issue, and I generally wish others well when they are going through a rough time like that. After reading your website, I am convinced that you are an utter crackpot. I think that on review, there is always a chance of reversing a trial court decision, but your chances are pretty bad. In fact, you are your own worst enemy--and I'll bet the trial Judge told you that at some point, unless your shitty attitude barred him/her from extending you even that courtesy. Your writing is obviously pro se drivel, you can't keep an argument straight, and, despite your obvious hatred of lawyers, you might consider whether there is a ~reason~ that intensive training occurs in law school, why it takes lawyers several years before they get any good at it, and why you got your ass handed to you.

Finally, a note on benevolence. You show none. You are confrontational, insulting, a real jackass. Seriously, do you get along with anyone? I'll bet you were one of those kids with no social skills that just got his ass kicked about every day at school. Your tone is haughty, and when someone reviews your nonsense in greater detail, you expose yourself as one of those charming people who believe himself smarter than you are, but who will also never shut up.

Since you seem to find mildly insulting quotationas to be clever, here are a couple for you:

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

Let me leave you with a little quotation of my own, and for you, this shoe really fits: "Once a jerkoff, always a jerkoff."

There are a couple of things that strike home for me. Income taxes, child custody arrangements, child support guidelines. Coersion by the government in any form is distasteful, and while I dislike being assraped by Uncle Sam, I don't think I much preferr being assraped by Jamal *and* Bubba and the rest of the friendly folks in prison. Worse, the separation from my kids.
