What I was trying to get at was that people need to know both what something is and what something is not to get the context of what they are being taught. Most folks just learn the random facts and definitions they are given by teachers at school. I remember how many kids that knew all the little facts, but never digested them, and that's what came to mind, but it's not very exacting. :-P

I think Bridget means

One cannot automatically apprehend that which is, until one discriminates the particulars of what they are from what they are not.
