Is it really failure if you get a chance to start over again? In my opinion, failure has permanence.

David, I'm not sure what you mean, exactly. I don't know anyone who masters a new skill on the first attempt.   :)

Edison didn't create the light bulb on his first attempt.  The Wright Brothers failed several times before they "flew."

If I just gave up every time I failed at something, I wouldn't have much of a life, and neither would you.

If scientists took every failure as permanent, we'd all be pretty screwed.

There's little stopping one from trying again, and again, and again.  Failure isn't permanent, unless you make it permanent by giving up.

I still can't believe I know how to drive a stick shift. An old boyfriend taught me when I was a teenager after many failed attempts by my father. I can't tell you how many times I stalled the car trying to learn.  A whole lot of times, that's for certain. Failing doesn't mean it can't be done, and it doesn't mean feigning success in order to continue trying.

But you said "permanence," so maybe you meant something else. I'm not clear on what you mean, so perhaps I've "failed" to understand you.  Should I give up?

Maybe he meant that one hasn't truly failed unto one gives up trying.  Which is really just a different way of stating the quote itself.

Perhaps he failed to make himself clear. Perhaps he'd like to try again. ;-)
