Thanks, Michael, I did like that one when I "heard" it, if I do say so myself.

My father and I had a very long chat yesterday, and, unfortunately, no real good came from it. My dad is a walking contradiction. He hates government, but believes that government is the solution to most problems. He ‘loves’ freedom, but believes that people should be made to do what is ‘right’. He is fearful of control, yet ‘knows’ that control is the only way to progress.

So, talking to him is like talking to a child. While smart, he does not seem to make connections between one thought and another. And he believes that if he makes a claim it should be taken as fact. Ask him to give an example or explain and he will refuse. Example:

We had been talking individualism and he said, ‘Son, I can hear almost everything you say coming from Sean Hannity.’ Of course, I said, ‘like what?’ And his response was, ‘I’m not going to play this game with you,’ and I crushed out my cigarette and started to get out of my seat. ‘Where are you going,’ he asked? I said, ‘I'm not going to play that game with you.’

Steve,

Even Rand said that you shouldn't try to proselytize to your parents. After a certain age, people get set in their ways. If you aren't going to win, there's no point in causing hurt.

I'd advocate not pushing matters, and simply advise bringing up specific points in a non-confronting way when they arise on their own. One way to make progress is to back up your father's arguments from an Objectivist standpoint when he comes up with a good point on his own. Don't look to correct, but to agree. My dad likes Limbaugh (and I don't scorn Rush myself) so when my Dad, for instance, quotes Rush by saying that "words have meanings" I agree with him, and give him a very brief lesson in Rand.

More flies with honey...

Ted

PS

Steve, BTW, your posts keep showing up with your quotation marks and apostrophes appearing as error-characters. You must be using smart quotes (ones that look like 66...99) which is not supportable by the browser you use. Use plain quotes "..." and this will not occur.
