| | Cecil John Rhodes
Rhodes, 1853-1902, was the businessman founder of the North and South Rhodesian colonies, what are now Zambia and Zimbabwe. Rhodes was the founder of De Beers, an ardent Liberal and a believer in the supremacy of Anglo-American cultrure, and a constant thorn in the side of the British monarchy and military. Participating in the various tribal and Boer wars of his era, he walked unarmed into the camp of the Ndebele, securing a just peace. He was one of the richest men in the world at his death, establishing the Rhodes Scholarships in his will. At his funeral, guns were not fired in respect of native custom. In stead, he was the only white man ever believed to receive the Matabele royal salute. L. Ron Hubbard claimed to be his reincarnation, but this can hardly be held against Rhodes.
