Erica, that is a most sensible premise, especially in communicating.

I must say that I had excellent parents. But I can remember so many occasions on which I wondered, don't these people (other's parents) remember being kids. I identified Erica's maxim well before I was 12.

Sanctioned :) R-E-S-P-E-C-T !  I often use the mode of thinking of  irrational adults as, intellectually, at the stage of myself as a young child when addressing them and have found it very useful and persuasive. (as well as respectful)

Thanks Erica,
I think we start life out taking things literally and objectively, and we excercise our own "what if's" in play ,but then encounter things like severe irrational parents (like your mother, mine), irrational ideaolgies, etc....
All kinds of personal challenges that we may give into for a while or for the rest of our lives....dah dah dah dunt.....dah dah dah dunt dah..(Dramatic "Dragnet" intro music)
The most recent example of my using this mode was last week. My children were in a three week summer day camp which advertised itself, in all it's flyers and sign-up forms ,as a creative arts camp;  dance, music, drama and art, and was promoted thusly by the art director of the camp, a parent from my childrens school. I knew it's base was a lutheran church ,but I was assured that the program was not a ministry or a bible camp. At the begining of the last week ,I informed the pastor (who was the camp director) that my children would be availible for one of the three end-of-camp performances scheduled, up to that point I had said "Hello" and nothing more to her. With out asking me why, she stated, with reproach "All of thechildren have to be present for all three performances Mrs. Morton." . "That will be imposible, we will be out of town." I replied. She wanted to know "Why?". I did not have to tell her, as I had two months prior ,sent her the fee for the camp  (my only obligation), which , by the by, she felt no need of varifing that she had received (I received no receipt or correspondance), but anyhoo, I replied that, "My mother in-law ( a practicing Catholic but in the vein and nature of Ted's mother) is having neck surgery and we will be there to do what we can." "Why do the children have to be there? I'm sure Barb (the art director, mother from my childrens school) can take care of them and get them to the performances that all of the children have worked so hard on and Mia(my daughter) has a solo." this attempt to "guilt trip" (?!!) with all the passion of a cult leader  went back and forth for a couple of minutes and then I just started replying to everything she said with "Mrs. Kristin, The children will not be here on saturday or sunday. They will be with their father, grandmother and I. They have excepted this and so must you." as calmly as to a child. I stated this four or five times before she excepted reality. She seemed calmed .(Above the example ,below , the ass kicking)
The rest of the week was creepy, lots of reproachful looks from most adults when I dropped off and picked up my beautiful children . Friday, Showtime ! The program was passed out to a full house, which could not have all been parents. And there it finally was ,in big bold letters on the program "EXPRESSING OUR FAITH through drama, music, dance and art" whithin, a questionaire "How has being in this ministry affected your camper?" Needless to say , before leaving that evening ,I spoke with "Mrs. Kristin " as the lying , fraudulent, cult leading, twisted adult asshole she had  commited herself to being, with the assurance that I would inform everyone at my childrens school as to the true nature of this "Summer arts camp".
And that's what I did on my summer vacation. LOL :D

Ah, memories of Camp. Except for the leeches, there was little in the way of indoctrination at Boy Scout camp. I took the canoeing merit badge four years in a row - it was one of the few classes that involved no written assignments, and I love the water. Each year I won the canoe race. Of course, once you earn a merit badge, you're not supposed to repeat it. So when they handed out the badges at the end of camp, I told the instructor, no thanks, I already got one last year. You should have seen the steam coming out of their ears!
