This, by its nature, MUST include religion - especially one which proclaims as its fundamental, 'submission' to its deity, an uncritical reliance on not just its god, but its prophet who speaks for its god and with whom there cannot be any questioning or criticism - as specifically proclaimed in its holy works......  to submit to authority is to deny ones mind...

In this regard, Hirsi Ali is quite correct in her assessment of Islam - as per her book, The Caged Virgin....

Ayn Rand wrote:

A basic premise is an absolute that permits no co-operation with its antithesis and tolerates no tolerance.

Compare and contrast this statement against the tolerance advanced in The Contested Legacy of Ayn Rand by David Kelly.

Luke,

Basic premises are things which can be known (rather than merely intelligently-opined). They're not matters of opinion on which reasonable people will disagree (and still remain reasonable with one another). All compromise on basic moral premises is evil (without exception).

It comes down to whether you see yourself as a means or an end. And that's it and that's all, distilled.

Luke,

Where does she say this? Can you provide the reference?

Also, when you say compare and contrast this statement with Kelley's book, what are you suggesting? Is it your view that Rand's statement is at odds with what Kelley is saying?

Just curious.

I just thought I would stir the pot a bit and see how people would react, Bill.

I do agree with Robert Malcom regarding any attempt to compromise with religion, for example, as morally flawed.  I admit that I have, over time, found my view moving closer to that of Peikoff in "Fact and Value" regarding error versus evil.  However, I do not find myself prepared to write a point by point comparison of Peikoff and Kelley's watershed works on the subject peppered with my own insights.
