| | Doctor Senator Ambassador Moynihan was a complex man. Nominally a political liberal in modern American terms, his overall outlook and specific insights sought the truth.
I just came across a paper of his for American Scholar, "Defining Deviancy Downward" (Readable here.) His thesis was that we have become tolerant of what was previously intolerable. That brought a reply --"Defining Deviance Up" -- from Charles Krauthammer, speaking to the American Enterprise Institute. (Readable here.)
This quote from him is widely repeated. I have not found its source. However, even George Will attributes it to Daniel Patrick Moynihan in his book, With a Happy Eye, but...: America and the World 1997-2002.
