I'm a late-20th Century American! That likely means I'll have gotten a suboptimal "public" education, with the exception of post-secondary schooling -- which is still somewhat groomed by market mechanics.
I went to West Europe in '97. I learned the following phrases in order to get by. They didn't help me much:
============== (1) I'm sorry, I don't know how to speak French. ("zhu nuh puh parl frahn-say")
(2) Oh dear me, I don't know how to speak Italian. ("known parlo ee-tah-lee-ah-noh")
(3) Begads, I don't know how to speak Greek. ("den mee-loh ee-lee-nee-kah") ==============
:-)
