I thought that this one would go all too well with Ted's Orwellian brainyquote!

But we are NOT our brothers' or sisters' keepers, we are NOT slaves to one another for we do NOT exist for the sake of others - and that a black man would dare promote such an attrition is the most immoral of abominations  ...

To re-emphasize ---

With over 9 score years of every version possible, socialism has always failed... why? because there is nothing moral about it - its premise is that of the slaver mindset, namely that one exists for the sake of others - and in practice that can only lead to totalitarianism [or 'liberal fascism'], whether it be oneida socialism, fabian socialism, bolshevek socialism, national socialism, maoist socialism..... further, to hide its vicious reality, it sets a false alternative, namely that self-interest instead of other-interest mitigates generosity, and that one's gain is inevitably another's loss [which reveal, btw, its origins as from the Taking Syndrome, which falsely proscribes the worldview as a zero-sum one]... in actuality, it is not concern with others that is the bulwark of socialistic ideals, but a power-lusting of those who would proscribe their views on others by force - generosity is the province, in actuality, of the self-interested person...

btw - send copy of this as letter to the editor of the Tampa Tribune... [whether it'll be posted is, of course, another matter]

Robert,
I agree with what you are saying - if the quote is in the hands of a left-leaning socialist it can only mean each person is a slave to the other.

However, if the quote is in the hands of a person who thinks like Thomas Paine the quote is self-interested:

He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.

This "brother's keeper" moral ideal is a nightmare of personal and social destructionism. It converts all people into zoo animals or slaves. The Holy Individual desperately needs to be his owner "keeper." No-one has more knowledge about his own needs and his own wants than the Sacred Self -- and no-one is more motivated to realize them. Being "kept" by others and having others "keep" you is a recipe for converting the whole world into caged beasts and limitless internecine enemies.
