| Right Genes for Tight Jeans? Posted by Ed Thompson on 9/06, 4:12am | ||
| Overall a good article, but contains a key error. Written by a professional, not an expert. Here's what's troubling: "Our bodies use calories in three ways: physical activity, the generation of heat, and basal metabolism. Only the first of these is under our control, and accounts for just 15% or so of total daily energy expenditure. The remaining 85% is under genetic control, something we have long known even without identifying the specific genes involved." Not only are all 3 ways to use calories under our control (instead of just 1 way as the 'guild socialist' doctor says), but there are at least 3 independent controls we have on the other side of the Energy Balance Equation (the Energy Intake side). That's at least half a dozen primary ways to control our body fat. This is what I mean by the difference between professionals and experts. In order to be a professional, you need accreditation and a pay-check. In order to be an expert, you need to know how to actually make a difference in peoples' lives.
