Immoral Immigration Laws

I submitted the following letter to the editor to several local newpapers. I know of at least three that published it including the Providence Journal (circulation 205,102.) I present it below in case the link expires. And I welcome your comments.

 Dear Editor,
 
Much criticism is being made of “illegal immigrants” but the man-made laws that make them so are contrary to the moral principals this country was founded on. This is not an issue of “them” against “us” but of the unalienable rights all individuals hold, irregardless of their country of origin.

Thomas Jefferson and the other founding fathers recognized this when they declared that, “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These rights precede government law and are unalienable; in other words, these rights cannot be separated from them by man-made law.

Freedom of travel is essential to man’s need to act on his reason so that he may produce and live. It is a moral right, an unalienable right and a constitutional right (see the Ninth Amendment.) Immigration laws that restrict this right are immoral, unconstitutional and an affront to the proper moral principles this country was founded on.

It’s time this country returned to its roots and embraced the words inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
