Why Liberty is Necessary for Morality
by Tibor R. Machan
It is often taken to be a feature of a free society that it rests on the belief that no one can tell what is morally right or wrong. That is supposed to be why people are not imposed upon with strictures the government forces them to follow. If, however, we could determine what is right and wrong, then, the idea follows, government could just proceed to force everyone to behave right. (Read more...)

Lessons in Lust (Behind the Privy)

For those who lust after power, frustration ensues at any barrier to the exercise of that power. From the U.S. to New Zealand, the reaction of the power-luster to his (or her) power being blunted is the same. (Read more...)

The Moral Hypocrisy of the "Anti-War" Movement
by Peter Krembs
At first glance, the new anti-war movement -- composed primarily of students from my generation -- seems like a relatively harmless group of demonstrators. But dig a little deeper, and one can see that the movement is just reeking of moral hypocrisy and unadulterated socialism. (Read more...)

My Tribute to the Columbia
by Anton Kelly
I have always been fascinated by space and space flight. Pictures of galaxies and rockets covered my bedroom walls when I was a child, and I have followed all of man's space programs with great interest. I looked on in envy when a few years ago a wealthy American paid twenty million dollars to spend a few days in orbit with the Russians. One of my life goals is to travel to Cape Canaveral to witness a shuttle launch. (Read more...)

Insurance by Remote Control
by Eric Rockwell
Last night I was examining some potential insurance plans, as I am self-employed and currently without coverage. I was unable to come to a conclusion as to whether I should commit to an outrageous monthly expense or just not bother with insurance at all. I began considering whether or not I should simply give up my own business in favor of working for a company that would take care of my insurance for me. Perplexed, I did what I usually do in such situations. I turned on the TV. (Read more...)

The obtuseness of Sen. Lott
by Tibor R. Machan
Let me start by quoting the now infamous remarks of Sen. Trent Lott at the birthday bash for Sen. Strom Thurmond: "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had of followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either." (Read more...)

That Expectant Hiss
by Peter Cresswell
People my age or older (down, Josephine) might remember the shiver of anticipation they once felt when putting the needle down on an eagerly awaited new record - the expectant hiss as the stylus cut through new, unplayed vinyl in that brief but magical moment before the first note is heard gave goosebumps in places that the more digitally convenient CDs don't even know exist. Once every two months my letterbox now offers me a similar thrill when a new copy of The Free Radical appears in in my letterbox... (Read more...)
