Why Is Religion Still Popular? This site presents good examples of the kind of irrational nonsense that religion presents to its followers. Once we open the door to mysticism, anything goes. I do surmise, however, that some followers of a religion are unhappy with various irrational ideas therein contained. They are, nevertheless, comfortable with their beliefs. They like the idea of a paternal god protecting them, they are comforted by the promise of eternal life, the "meaning" - no matter how irrational - of serving god. So instead of rocking the boat with questions such as how can there be three gods and simultaneously only one god, they simply accept them. Too bad they don't see that the obvious contradictions in all religions should warn them to rock the boat indeed, and in so doing, abandon religion entirely. Many Muslims, for example, embrace (in the 21-st century!) an irrational, supremacist, violent religion featuring jihad, dhimmi status, enforcement of Sharia and Hadith, terrible treatment of women, slavery, and an anti-Western mentality. It took two thousand years to get rid of the "divine rights of kings." We are, however, still fighting pernicious religious doctrines such as altruism, the evils of sex outside of marriage, the immorality of selfishness, the sin of seeking one's happiness as an end in itself, etc. The Enlightenment broke many religious shackles on the minds of men, but some remain.
