Sicking The Saddamites #3 - They Really Do Hate Freedom!
by Jason Pappas

War critics often laugh at the notion that our enemy hates our liberty and the very concept of a liberal democracy. Of course, the hate-America left and isolationist right, construct a straw-man caricature of the actual argument. "Why would terrorists care what we have here? Or who could hate such things?" And they point to polls showing Muslim interest in the West; many do desire to study or live here.

The problem is not that Muslims aren’t attracted to life in the West. Just the opposite! Devout Muslims hate the fact that nominal Muslims are attracted away from the religious practice and Islamist cause by the temptations of the West. Why is that so hard to understand? The deeply religious have always had problems with freedom.

Jonah Goldberg writes a excellent commentary in response to recent statements by Osama’s man in Iraq. Zarqawi, has issued a condemnation of democracy as “against the rule of God.” Apparently Zarqawi must have had a hard time getting the latest strategy bulletins from Osama’s cave. Perhaps, Zarqawi didn’t leave a forwarding address in Fallujah. In any case, it reads as follows:

“Dear Comrade Zarqawi, please adhere to the party line. We love Sweden. We love Sweden so much that under the Talliban we were trying to construct a socialist utopia. Yes, it was a religious utopia but who cares about these issues in metaphysics – the ends justify the means. Comrade Zarqawi, you must coordinate with the Saddamites and confirm their message. Did you notice how Dubya looked dumb-founded in that schoolroom on 9/11? See Fahrenheit 9/11 and read the Nation or anything from the Independent Institute.”

Amusingly enough, useful idiots in the West had previously jumped for joy when Osama’s very explanations confirmed their theories. These critics believed that their deep cultural study and careful analysis of Osama’s speeches validated their central thesis: Islamists are freedom fighters against Western imperialism. But Zarqawi can’t keep the lie straight, especially if he keeps reading the Koran. Damn, what’s a Saddamite to do?

In any case, my intention is not to argue about the war and how it should or should not be fought. It’s about us. Or more exactly, our friends who just can’t believe we are fighting a religiously motivated dark-aged savage. Surely, it must have been something we did, they opine. If only we were perfect, no one would hate us. Of course, as Rand has noted time and time again, some people hate the good for being the good. That’s hard for Americans to face.
