My Own Libretto
by Alicia Patti

Enchanted with my own fierce song-
Majesty harmony-
I shunned the teeming commonplace
To trill my mind's decree.

Long I searched for this ideal,
The treasure of my heart,
Steadfast in the bold pursuit
Of excellence in art.

My song and mine alone to sing,
Dissecting every tone;
Every loving counterpoint
Mine and mine alone.

I sought to write my own Libretto,
Depicting noble deeds
Enacted by a race of men
Invulnerable to creeds:

Individuality
The goal of every bard
With complemental artistry
As their symphonic god!

For this supremest quality,
Enebriate of verse,
Is all endeavor will allow . . .
And my beloved curse.
