Depth Perception
by John Paul Sherman

If life seemed a pebble in an unknown palm,
To be dropped down a wishless well,
To plummet primly, deft and dumb,
   Through shadow-thickened air, until
   Time's invisible, ravelling sash
Was stopped, snipped by a liquid floor...
Perhaps I'd listen for the splash,

           --Then change my metaphor.
