The Magnate and the Moon
by G. Stolyarov II

The magnate built his wealth from nil,
Grand industries acquired.
One dream did his ambition fill,
From childhood years desired,

When, gazing at the star-lit sky
From the rooftop of his shack,
He promised to the moon to fly
And cruise with laurels back.

And now possessions he has all,
Laboratories, planes, and steel,
And scientists who heed his call
To render his wish real.

His plants buzz, busy, day and night,
From scrap a carcass forge.
His miners extract ores with might,
Conquering peak and gorge.

With time does on the landing pad
A rocket ship appear,
Titanium wings in luster clad,
And canisters in rear.

Yet after work is finalized,
These chambers empty stay.
All rocket fuel's monopolized
By stringent FAA.

The magnate to the state appeals.
He is laughed off the floor.
"But fools will do," the Congress feels,
"What was not done before."

"Our FAA's the layman's friend,
All standards keeps in place.
And it will not consent to send
A bourgeois to space."

"Sustainability's the key
That you tycoons locks out.
A bit of insight and you'll see,
We can't restrictions flout."

"What happens to one-size-fits-all
When men like you can fly?
Watch our space spending swiftly fall
If you our norms defy."

"Tax funds we must on something spend,
For each of us does dread
The money needing back to send,
Cutting our ranks instead."

"The competition you will spawn
Is brutal as a gun.
To witness proletarian dawn
There must remain but one."

"But what of tourism?" questioned he,
"Of lands to sell and tame?
To squander opportunity
This great is boundless shame!"

"Who needs the moon," they laughed in scorn,
"When each man has a niche,
When we plan life before one's born?
'Tis but a childish wish!"

And then they mentioned, "By the way,
You've zoning laws ignored.
Your ship cannot... anywhere stay.
The Peace must be restored!"

They did not reach his craft too soon.
They searched for him in vain.
He made fuel, took off for the moon,
And flew there to remain.
