I was deeply touched by Alfredo's loss and his terrible plight. I came to know many 'illegal aliens' while working my way through grad school for psychology. I interviewed hundreds of men from Mexico and Central America who were injured and applied for Worker's Comp. For nearly a year I spent hours listening to good and honest men tell me terrible things. If I could write with even a fraction of James' skill there would be few readers who wouldn't find tears in their eyes.
But when James started his, "God damn you" rants, I was offended. At a certain point - if one has shifted from telling about the awful things that have happened to a good person, to making unspecified demands that the reader do something - demands that people take some unspecified action, and when those demands are cast as unsupported statements -each starting with "God damn you", it can be annoying. Hell, it pissed me off!
I would have said they are immigrants not aliens. To me, an alien is from outer-space. But that is the legal term that was chosen. In either case they are illegal and it certainly make no sense to damn me for it in any case.
I'm not the one who is denying anyone's right to make a living. Don't damn me for what governments, governments I have nothing to do with, are doing.
James said,
God damn everyone who said the Alfredo's of the world have no right to be in the United States. Alfredo provides services in the health field. May all the services you take for granted cease immediately. Find your own health care. Wash your own dishes. Clean your own houses. Pick your own goddamned fruit.
Hey, I believe that every country has the right and the duty to control it's border. I'd be the first to say that our politicians and bureaucrats have made an awful muddle of the laws and the enforcement. But whining about washing dishes and picking fruit isn't a sound argument for anything. From your "God damn you"s I haven't a clue as to what differences you want - not with enough specificity to even agree or disagree - much less act.
You said,
God damn you if you have anything to do with that hundreds-year-old cesspool of a corrupt government in Mexico that kills its people’s dreams and forces its best and brightest to flee their borders to feed their families.
and,
God damn you for every collectivist bromide you’ve regurgitated while people wallow in poverty.
Well, this is an Objectivist forum and I've supported Rand's view of Capitalism since the 60's - so I agree completely with your assesment of Mexico but by now, all I'm motivated to do is write this long boring post telling you what I think of all your "God damn you" statements.
Then you say,
"And God damn everyone who can think no more deeply than to dismiss the immigration problem by saying, 'the law is the law.' Fix the goddamned law."
What about those who think no more deeply than to give us an emotional rant without one single specific suggestion? It left me feeling insulted.
If this wasn’t just an exercise in emotional release or ‘look how wonderful I am because I feel so deeply’, then post some reasoned suggestions or call for ideas. This is complex problem and deserves a more purposeful approach.
