I think this is a great article. You make your point perfectly, and your point is important and 100% right.

I agree that you did make your point perfectly and it was an important one. Since reading your article, I have made sure that when I tell my girls I am proud of them, I tell them what they did that I am proud of. I'm hoping to help them make the connection between pride and accomplishment.

Very important point. I am very careful to tell my children what it is I feel proud of them for, and more importantly, try to get them to be still long enough to take genuine pride in their own acheivements. In the Thanksgiving tradition of thinking about things to be thankful for, I try to help them see what qualities, and actions of theirs are worthy of pride and gratitude.

Thank you Barbara, Michael and James!

Tenya and John, it sounds like you are both terrific parents, and have given careful consideration about how to instill honest pride in your children.  I think many parents make the mistake of thinking that their pride in their children must be "unconditional" which basically renders it meaningless.

Yes! There's so much good stuff on Solo, this is no exception and I wish I had more time to browse.

This is extremely relavent to me because this week at my college was "multicultural week." There was an Asian-American/ Pacific Islander day, a Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Chicano/Chicana day, a Native American Day, an African American day, and a non-descript Multicultural Day. Each day was accompanied by a presentation from one of the cultural groups on campus and by ethnic food from the dining service.

It was extremely fun for me to hold up the info card in the dining hall and beg of my peers, "Why is there no White day?" Of course I was only being facetious, I don't want a White day and I don't want any other day. The whole thing was ridiculous. Today at lunch I had my meal interrupted by the people from the African American Student Union asking everyone in the hall to stand for the Black National Anthem. And everyone but myself and one other stood. It was amazing. Black people, white people, Asian/Pacific-Islander people, Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Chicano/Chicana people, orange people and purple people, all stood up, bowing to this form of collectivism.

Yuck.

Thanks for your article, I enjoyed it very much.
Meg
