Excellent essay, Tibor! A few related thoughts ...

I know an environmentalist, and she's freezing in northern Minnesota -- because of high heating costs (but Alaska is safe from mans' dirty hands).

I know a devout Jehovah's Witness, and she's a morally-muddled, rule-breaking opportunist (but repenting during the 1000-year Armageddon, ought to guarantee her eternal and infantile life on earth -- under the fatherly rule of King Jesus and the 144,000 chosen elders).

And I know a Christian Scientist, and she's all covered with skin lesions like a damned leper (sadly, she must feel that she's not praying hard enough -- or that she actually deserves this state of affairs).

Take these 3 familiar cases, and mutliply them by 100 million -- and I think I can see the scope of importance that your essay casts.

I don't understand Machan's grievance against environmentalists as the cause of a constrained oil supply. According to BP's own statistics (requires Adobe), daily oil extraction increased nearly 20% from 1994 to 2004. If environmentalists have tried to interfere with the growth of the oil industry, they haven't done so all that effectively.

Mark, maybe it would have increased by 21% if it wasn't for the environmentalists. Also, maybe gas prices would be $1.50 a gallon if it weren't for the environmentalists. Just because they haven't stopped the growth of oil production and usage doesn't mean that they are impotent.

Honestly, I could give a damn if  oil companies drive the prices back up to three dollars a gallon. I went out during this last price hike and bought a car that gets over 35 miles to a gallon. A full tank of gas lasts me nearly 4 weeks. I buy less gas, and this is how I protest high prices. I have placed my vote with a 2003 Chevy Cavaleir.
As for parents that would allow their children to suffer, and/or die for religeous beliefs. Line them all up, and give me an M-16. I will have the problem solved in a few days. Those people make me sick!
I apologise if I seem a little dramatic about this, but it is a subject I am absolutely passionate about. As a parent of the 2 most wonderful children in the world, I am biast, I can't understand how a person can sit idly by, and watch their children suffer, and not do anything about it.
