Adam Smith once said, "mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent".
When someone writes fantastic poetry or books in prison, he can be praised in that light, and that light alone. But, justice would have it that he atone for his crime- regardless of how saintly or evil he becomes. Though death is never a severe enough punishment for the murder of others, it is the closest justice can come to matching the punishment to the crime of murder.
