However, the independence of many individual Chinese characters shouldn't be over-stressed or over-analyzed. Many of these characters really don't have clear meanings unless they are used in combination with others.

Chinese and other ideographic writing systems may seem very different from alphabet-based writing systems, but in reality the brain parses both writing systems similarly. An English reader's brain parses words as "blocks" of strokes, just as a Chinese reader's brain parses the blocks of strokes used in Chinese characters.
