| | Dean, we both agree that preaching and lies don't belong in the classroom. But teaching alternatives, as Professor Machan and I both mentioned, is critical in a course like Intro to Psychology, or History of Psychology, and many of the different survey courses - particularly those that follow the historical evolution of thought in a given field.
It is a matter of judgment as to what amount of detail is given, or even which alternatives warrant being brought up at all. For example, I would NOT be giving Intelligent Design as an alternative in a course on biological evolution, but I would discuss Lamarkian Inheritance at the appropriate point and why it was discarded.
The best teachers give the evidence and reasoning behind each of the major alternatives... and point out where the reasoning failed, when that is the case.
