Re:

Altruism, a dirty word for altruists,

That surprises me. I suspect that Jim wrote "altruists" where he meant to write "egoists" or "objectivists."

He is elegantly correct in his wording, Kate. Altruists do not want the explicit nature of their ethics discussed in essential terms. Same reason why you hear "health reform" and not socialized medicine.

Or "sickness care."   These government programs are for the sick not the healthy.

something Joe discussed is also valuable - the fact that you "measure" altruism based on the level of sacrifice.  Ask people a question about who is more altruistic, the rich man who gives $100 out of millions vs. the poor man who gives even $20 and has nothing - they all tell you the latter - why?  because it is the level of sacrifice they measure.  This applies in other areas, like forgiving the unforgivable (murderers, etc.) as opposed to forgiving people who transgress but then genuinely change - or helping people who are ungrateful vs. those who are - many areas this applies - sacrificing a lucrative career to run off to the 3rd world is another.  Do they like it more?  sometimes they may, but often not or regardless of that the fact that they sacrificed a high value is what is measured.

Kate, thanks for pointing out the typo. I was trying to make the point that "altruism" is a dirty word for Objectivists and others who understand the philosophy of Ayn Rand, and that for us the word does not carry the positive connotations that collectivists try to imbue it with.

I agree with Ted in post #3 that those collectivists do not want to have the explicit nature and consequences of their ethical philosophy discussed, but I did screw up the wording I meant to use, as Kate pointed out.
