John,

By the way I've heard people recommend cycling on and off of creatine. Does the science support this?
After reviewing several dozen studies on creatine, I'm not aware of any actual benefit -- or of any potential (physiological) benefit -- to cycling on and off creatine.

Ed,

My point was that I've never encountered sellers hyping calcium supplements in the way you suggested. But if you have, then I'll take your word for it. Still, people should be able to read labels and see how much calcium is in the supplements they buy. It's stated right there on the label.

Bill,

No worries, that was sort of my point, too.

Apparently creatine supplementation can help brain performance too.

Yeah, there's some real advantages to taking it, but I don't want to risk it, given its effects on my blood pressure. Nor do I want to mess with "potassium loading" to offset those effects.

All right Ed, you got a place in CT if you're ever passing through to get a good workout :)

Note about the pic, this is in mid-descent.

John,

One day I'll take you up on that -- and I'll provide the post-workout recovery shakes. I make a mean Egg-Beaters-Gatorade-Whey-Protein-Frozen-Banana-Frozen-Strawberry Supercompensation Scientifilicious recovery shake to chug-down post-workouts.

lol, sounds delicious to me! Let me guess the science here:

1) Whey protein for fast digesting protein combined with;

2) The glucose in gatorade to restore muscle glycogen and promote protein synthesis

3) Egg beaters a medium digesting protein combined with;

4) Pureed bananas and strawberries, a lower glycemic food than glucose for continued sustained protein synthesis

Hi John,
Knees track over the toes. Push the knees out, tighten the glutes. :)

Pay attention to Mike... It's all about form. Knees over toes and tighten the glutes.

LOL!!!!!

Yeah looking at my pic again my form doesn't look good. I thought I normally keep my knees tracked over my toes. I think this was towards the end of my last set so I was feeling fatigued, but I shouldn't sacrifice form. Thanks for the tip Mike :)

LOL!  Very funny Steve.  But that's not a squat.

Kids, actually,  have perfect squats:

[from a crossfit website]

We forget how to squat because of chairs, tight pants, and ignoramus's that tell us they're not good for our knees.  The opposite is true.

Mike,

It's true that kids squat perfectly, but you left out the biomechanic driver of that. The main reason that kids squat perfectly is that their heads are big in proportion to their bodies (perhaps as high as one-third of their total body weight!). If a kid tried to squat like most adults do, they would topple over (fall forward).

Your explanations -- chairs, tight pants, and ignoramus's -- are all very true and relevant, but we've got to remember that kids have big heads. It's just an idea that flashed before me, but it may be biomechanically advantageous to wear a 50-lb helmut while squatting. Don't try this at home, because it may break your neck.

Ed,

Adults can learn how to squat properly, regardless of head size.  Many Asians can squat properly because they never unlearned how.

Mike,

Good retort.

It was a little racist for you to bring up Asians as a group like that, but this kind of prejudice is to be expected from folks who own cats.

Racist? Prejudice? I happen to be a great admirer of good squat-ability. Would it also be prejudice to mention that Chinese have an average IQ second only to Ashkenazi Jews?

About my cats: as far as I can tell I don't OWN them. They frequently remind me, THEY are master.

Yes, because it is such a social injustice to the Caucasians. On a lighter note (is there a lighter note?) I heard that it was Mao who put the asian in caucasian. Anyway, it's only two sentences in, and I think I may have already started to ramble. I blame my genetic ancestors for that.

About my cats: as far as I can tell I don't OWN them. They frequently remind me, THEY are master.

You and so many others who also "live with" cats. That's why I can make sweeping generalizations about "you people." You show me a cat owner, and I will show you someone who wants to be tamed or even dominated. Oops. There I go again. And in only two sentences again!

:-)

Hey,

I'm one Caucasian who can do the Asian squat and always have been able to do it. (Recall my endorsement of "Nature's Platform" as an improved alternative to the standard toilet.) But I'll have to say that I'm an exception. Most Caucasians can't get their heals flat on the ground. I'm not sure why. It may be lack of Achilles tendon flexibility, but I suspect there's more to it than that.
