Not looking for tools to strengthen my own arguments when I purchased this book, I perhaps judge it on a different basis from J.R. The book does indeed have its shortcomings if viewed as an academic work. For instance, the title of the chapter on the New Testament describes it as more evil than the Old. Yet, while the chapter on the Jewish Testament does chiefly deal with the petty nature of the God of the Old Testament and his bizarre commandments and offhand calls for the death of non-believers, the chapter on the New Testament deals chiefly with its textual and epistemological inconsistencies and in almost no way deals with any moral issues. I fear that I would find a book on mere atheism tedious. This work is entertaining fun.

Matthew Ashby had suggested reading a transcription of a debate hosted by Hugh Hewitt at http://hughhewitt.townhall.com/Transcript_Page.aspx?ContentGuid=2fbc257d-4761-43ff-adfd-279a3e01f69b
and having just finished it I strongly recommend it to all.

God is Not Great a Surprise Hit

From The WSJ: (Click Here for Full Article)

"But the biggest surprise is a blazing attack on God and religion that is flying off bookshelves, even in the Bible Belt. "God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," by Christopher Hitchens, wasn't expected to be a blockbuster. Its publisher, Twelve, a fledgling imprint owned by France's Lagardère SCA, initially printed a modest 40,000 copies. Today, seven weeks after the book went on sale, there are 296,000 copies in print. Demand has been so strong that booksellers and wholesalers were unable to get copies a short time after it hit stores, creating what the publishing industry calls a "dark week." One experienced publishing veteran suggests that Mr. Hitchens will likely earn more than $1 million on this book."

I remember a certain Marcus B. predicting that America would greet the release of Hawking's The God Delusion with book burnings in Washington and New York. It's funny how little Americans think of themselves and how little our European friends like Marcus know and think of us. The only other person I know (besides on this list) to have bought the book is a Christian who attends church and thinks this is a great book.

Thank God for Christopher Hitchens"

"But do yourself a favor and skip the Dawkins and Harris; they're smug, turgid, and boring, with all the human feeling of a tax return. Read Hitchens instead. Test your faith severely or find a champion for your feelings, but read Hitchens. It's a tendentious delight, a caustic and even brilliant book."
