I agree that this was a teriffic recording of the Beethoven 9'th Symphony. However, the track listing created somewhat of a confusion in the mind of Mr. Landauer. There are only 4 movements in the symphony. The lengthy 4't movement was split into 2 parts giving the impression of there being five movements. Also, there is an English translation of the Schiller text in the pullout that accompanies the cd. Paul M. Kay

Thanks for that explanation, Paul. I'd thought for a moment that Jeff might have heard someone whistling Beethoven's 'lost' fifth movement. :-)

There's a rumour that Mr Rowlands was seen at a live performance of B's 7th in San Francisco recently. Clearly a case of mistaken identity. Next thing I'll be told he's been spotted at the opera!

I have umpteen recordings of the 9th, most of them by Furtwangler, none of them shabby. But Jeff's recommendation sounds worthwhile.
