I'm thoroughly surprised to see this artist mentioned. I failed to purchase their last full length, Life is Killing Me, after being somewhat unimpressed with World Coming Down (not to mention the lack of appeal in track names akin to I Don't Wanna Be Me). Type O Negative's primary appeal to me, however, is their haunting and morose overtone which can be at times beautifully executed. The music is powerfully emotive, and I do consider October Rust to be Type O's fulminant album. While I doubt anything else in their repertoire would be appropriate here, this example fits nicely. Highly recommended.

While I like this album, I think it pales compared to their even more coarse 'Bloody Kisses' or especially 'Slow, Deep and Hard' albums.

I was very surprised to see Type O mentioned at all on a 'Sense of Life' forum. Most of their lyrics are to put it mildly, not so positive. One song I always liked for the lyrics having the right idea even if not a nice presentation though was 'Der Untermensch', off 'Slow, Deep and Hard'. It may be in line with Objectivist ethics, starting out:

Hey you on public assistance
Why don't you get a job?
Sell some dope and buy some pride
It's the only thing you couldn't rob

Socioparasite

How does it feel to live for free?
Get off society's back
Skells like you allowed to live
You wonder why we're taxed

So if Type 'O' Negative is 'good' than what is bad? When I worked at a college radio station I checked out a couple of their albums and basically they sound like quirky death metal rubbish. The type of music Lindsey and others have rallied against time and time again.

If you can post a postive review of an band that is crap, should a review about how much of a life affirming genius John Cage, Britney Spears or some monkey craping on a keyboard is be allowed?

Or, is there no objective way to judge music by various set standards.

For me, I like lots of music, including the occasional sickly pop song or rubbish art-school non-sense, for whatever reason it appeals to me. But I seperate that from my love of great music like John Coltrane, Ludwig Van, Miles Davis, etc.

Of course the fan of Charlies Angels that was Ayn Rand always surprised me in saying there are objective standards in art. I dare anyone on this site to watch more than three episodes in a row of Charles Angels the original TV series and not try to take his own life ;) or worse yet, proclaim it objectively good art or even anything more than base enteratainment.

I saw Type O Negative many years ago when they opened for Queensryche.  Their big hit at the time, I believe, was "Loving You is Like Loving the Dead."  I was not impressed.  The roadies started taking down their equipment before they were finished playing!  But, we actually met a couple there that had come just to see Type O Negative, and left before Queensryche started.  That was unfathomable to me, since Queensryche just blew them away in terms of quality and intensity.

So, have they gotten any better since those days?

yeah, Type O Negative are musical brilliance compared to Kittie.

If you want good metal, may I suggest 'Tool'? Not really my thing but they actually change time signatures during their songs and go outside of the 4/4 monotony that is most rock/pop.

Type O certainly don't have the musical ability of Queensryche, but it's still nice for a gothic metal mix. I haven't seen them live, but know their live album sounds absolutely terrible compared to their studio material. Perhaps a good gothic sound requires heavy production and doesn't lend itself well to live performance?

I've seen them live, they sounded quite good, but the only real live album I heard them do was a low quality bootleg which could explain the quality issues.

I will say on the topic of this particular album It's not my partiucular favorite but some of the tunes on it tend to be the "brightest" of their career.

I'd still stand by them as romantic, they just kind of represent a darker side of romanticism, the melodies through the sludge just always get to me.

As long as the subject of Type O live albums is up...

I have to point out that the "live" album "The Origin of the Feces" (an early, and imho, rather badly done, album that smacked of Pete Steele's earlier band "Carnivore") was actually not live.  It was studio faked to sound live.. as a joke. *shrug* for what THAT obscure knowledge is worth.

I remember Carnivore, too much death metal, not enough gothic for me.

Thanks for the trivia about the 'live' album. That is really strange, I think on the 'Origin' album they were even insulting and cursing at their fans in the simulated 'audience'.

I just remembered origin of the feces after I posted, I dug it and Slow deep and hard (my hs "break-up" album).  The fake crowd was great...  "I got some good news for you morons... THIS IS OUR LAST SONG! *THUNDEROUS CHEERING AND APPLAUSE*"  I also used to love Carnivore, just a good rage venting experience... Ah my heavy metal days

Laure -

"loving you was like loving the dead" is a lyric from "Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)" and, btw, was a pretty tongue-in-cheek song.  It was just that much funnier that the song was so popular, when TON wrote it to mock their own fans.

But yes, they've gotten MUCH better since the days of "Bloody Kisses" (the album w/ Black No. 1).  In fact... try October Rust!  ;-)

Not to quibble, but TON certainly changes time signatures. ;-)
