My friend's dog watched his wife trying to wrestle the X-Box controller from him (she wanted to watch TV and he didn't) - the dog came up and grabbed it in its teeth and brought it over to her.

Research shows that, if you are trying to get something that is just out of your reach, a chimp will grab it and bring it to you. What does that mean?

One generalization is that chimps are as smart as toddlers (toddlers also "pass the test" and will help you get something that is out of your reach). One generalization is that chimps are using concepts. That chimps are mentally working with concepts such as "strive," "privation," "end-oriented (teleological) behavior" and whatever other concepts that can be abstracted from the act of reaching for something.

However, ascribing these concepts to chimp minds -- in my view -- is an act of "reaching for something out of reach." Animals can do so many things, but what does that mean?
