Does anybody know any good essays about public roads versus private roads, and in particular about how a system of private roads would work out in practice?

Also, by the way, does anybody know any books about the history of Capitalism from an Objectivist viewpoint?

I'm afraid I don't recall reading any such articles. I'm not very interested in the subject either.

I did find this abstract of an old article in the archives of Regulation Magazine :

"A New Approach to Private Roads
By Eduardo Engel, Ronald Fischer and Alexander Galetovic

Roadway privatization offers many benefits, from decreasing transportation’s dependence on public coffers to using market forces to decrease the number of “white elephant” roadway projects. But, in the United States, only two private road projects have been undertaken in the last two years, in part because potential investors and the government worry about the financial risks of such projects. We believe those risks can be overcome through government awarding of “Present-Value-of-Revenue” franchises to private roadway companies, which would protect those companies’ investment but would also protect taxpayers."

Take a look at: "Roads Without the State" by Peter Samuels

Also, don't forget to use the 8th wonder of the world: Google! Search for "private roads" or similar keywords.

Although I haven't read it yet, Dr George Reisman's Capitalism: A Treatise on Economics must have something to say about the history of capitalism in its 1096 pages!

Haha, sounds like something Robert M. Pirsig wrote in his book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".
