| | I've just read through the independence.org.uk article you posted, Marcus, as well as gone to the official EU online site and scanned through what they have done, are doing, and will do to Europe as a whole.
All I can say to you is: Run. All I could ever possibly say to the rest of Europe is: "Brother, you asked for it." But to others, I say we should take notice of this great looming disaster, or it's going to fall on all our heads. Even America.
Just reading through some of the policies of the EU on their own website, I see similarities emerging: Between the EU and the world of "Atlas Shrugged".
A brief scenario: Let's say a producer in the UK, a corporation, discovers a better form of some random product (any product, it doesn't matter what) and seeks to market it internationally, thereby increasing the profit of that company and the UK as a whole. Now, Turkey, providing it has been accepted into the EU, can market a similar product, at lower expense, but with far less quality inherent in the productive ability of the UK. Internationally, the UK product will be accepted for the quality it possesses. Consumers will generally rely on the quality of a product even if the cost is slightly higher, simply because reliability will result in more satisfaction than affordability every time.
Turkey, being a member (not at the moment, but you get the point) has the right to petition the European Economic and Social Committee (which actually exists) because its profits, work force and economic stability will be affected by this new UK product. The Committee will have the power, legally, to halt production of that product, given the amount of people in Turkey that may lose their jobs because the UK product has put them out of business with its quality. And instead of seeking a better way to produce, or a better product, they go to the Committee--a Big Brother with a Big Stick.
This means: A body of citizens not related to the UK, having nothing to do with legislative or voting body, can affect EXTREME change within the UK. Much like a foriegn army invading and enforcing its will.
I doubt such a thing has occurred to date (if it has, tell me...I will physically shudder). However, I see this being the end result of centralization of European economic power. The sovereignty of any given nation within the EU is sacrificed, for economic and social whims of a body far removed from that nation. In the effort to create a union with economic and political force that can compete with the United States, the EU will become another Soviet Russia. The misguided social and economic reform will lead to economic collapse, which will lead to military forces (that the EU already possesses--Eurocorps) scooping up what land is available (even if already occupied). The EU, if viewed not as it currently is, but as it will become, will be the most terrifying force since Soviet Russia.
Sadly, the UK will fall. If no public outcry has been raised to date, then one isn't forthcoming. The platitudes and hazy slogans of the EU have decieved most of Western Europe already. If the British people hope to maintain their sovereignty, a MASSIVE REVERSAL in philosophical and economic ideals is needed. I don't see this happening.
I hope others will post on this forum, with similar scenarios, more frightening than mine, if only to show others the full scope of the EU disaster. J
