The rights to an Atlas Shrugged movie have been passed around a lot, but it looks like Crusader Entertainment may be the one. Their CEO says maybe two movies, maybe three, whatever it takes.

And James Hart is writing it. I hated his butchering of Contact, but after reading this interview with him about Atlas Shrugged, I'm pretty hyped :

Great news. After much deliberation:

Sigourney Weaver = Dagny Taggart
Tom Selleck = Hank Rearden
Antonio Banderas = Francisco d'Anconia

Despite a difference in age between Weaver and Banderas, it could be taken care of.

Should I be casting director, or what?

On second thought, the heroine should be younger, to appeal to a younger audience. A younger Sigourney would be ideal but Jodie Foster's got the right hard-edge that can portray a no-nonsense protagonist. Ashley Judd doesn't have that. Julia Roberts shouldn't even be in the running.

I personally think that the best way to cast Atlas is not by looking for celebrities to fit characters, but instead do open call auditions. I'm willing to bet that there are a lot of young actors and actresses that would be better for a lot of these parts than some of the celebrities currently on the scene. Some of the better celebrities are, in my opinion, too old to play the likes of the heroes. I believe that the heroes in the movie should look younger than their characters' age in the sense that it symbolizes that Objectivism is conducive to the spirit of youth as it is a philosophy for the young and the young at heart.

Thank you. I was waiting for someone to say that.

That, and it makes a lot of sense to avoid actors who may have participated in movies that are slammed in the film, such as the notion that a rich guy is always the evil bastard that the heroine should turn down. Otherwise, Kay Ludlow's remark in Galt's Gulch will seem more humorous than serious (if it isn't cut out altogether).
