CLICK HERE to hear “I’d Like to Welcome Everyone / Lighthouse Jubilee,” another song from The Watcher on the Shore. The lyric is as follows. (Stereo earphones or good speakers are recommended to hear the music to best advantage.)

(Note: In the play, the Lighthouse Jubilee is an annual fair in the community featuring various activities, markets, and entertainments. This scene takes place just outside the gates to the Jubilee fairgrounds, which jut out into the water of an ocean bay. Helen Green, charged with the task of keeping the waiting crowd amused, was the singer of a previously posted song, “A Girl and a Boy.”)

Helen.

I’d like to welcome everyone!

I’m Helen Green, your host.

You’ll see me leading the parade here all up and down the coast.

But they have asked me to tell you to be patient

Waiting by this gate.

This year the Lighthouse Jubilee

Has broken records—so you’ll have to wait.

In the meantime I’ll regale you

With all that you can see

There inside—we will not fail you

At this year’s Jubilee.

Every kind of famous dance

From waltz to country hoedown,

Even the Charleston that’s set to revive—

Yes, everything that makes you glad you’re alive—

Puppets and magic and nothing that’s tragic

At this year’s Jubilee!

[Second verse is repeated using strings.]
