Thank goodness I didn't start my 80's pop music review before you posted that clarification! But, it seems you have just added an order of magnitude of complexity to the analysis! Some are, some aren't!!!! HOW in tarnation an I supposed to tell the difference?!!?!! :)

Here is one more song about selfishness called "I Won't Back Down" by Tom PettyJohnny Cash also covered it a few years back.

I Won't Back Down

by Tom Petty

Well I won't back down, no I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down

Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won't back down

Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
hey I will stand my ground and I won't back down

Well I know what's right I got just one life
In a world that keep on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down

Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground and I won't back down
And I won't back down
No I won't back down

Kat, that's an excellent find, that Tom Petty song. Inspiring, if simplistic, lyrics!

Joe,
Many singers did not write their own songs back then, either.
THAT is a major problem these days. A singer is one thing and a songwriter is another.

Another problem is that many songwriters do not write their own songs, either. (Yeah, yeah, save it for another time...)

So to stay on topic, I once saw an interview with Paul Anka where he said that the biggest mistake he ever made as a singer was with My Way, because he didn't do it his way, he did it Frankie's way.

Michael
