I saw an interview earlier with a New York City commuter who said the following when asked what he thought about being randomly stopped and searched before boarding the New York subway system:

"I felt like my privacy was invaded...today "I" was blown up."

This is among the wisest comments I've heard from an ordinary person on the street in a long long time. I wonder how many people look at these random searches from THAT point of view.

Re your last 'wondering,' given we're talking about feelings-of-(supposed)-'privacy' in a governmentally-supervised 'public' (would you have it any other way, re London?) place, my answer is: more people now, obviously (the 'war's *over-there*, right?) than will be after one of several/many literally IS 'blown up' in a NY (rather than London) subway.
Clearly, though, not enough NY'rs wish to referendum that 'authorities' be restricted from entering the subway system...for some strange reason. Maybe somebody (like, the commuter) could try to get a petition going as well as media-complaining to loaded-question 'reporters'?
