| | I'd like to give my account of it as a student(though it is a few months late): it was a joke at my school. Most of the kids who went on strike did so merely to skip class and/or smoke (smoke what? I was never told). Many did not care about what the purpose was and many of them took it as a joke. For example, at my school, there was a person holding a Newport cigarette sign in the crowd. Many said it was to 'protest high taxes on cigarettes, 'however, my friend (who knew the sign owner) told me that the owner saw the protest, went to his car, took out the sign, and told a very large friend of his to hold it up, merely 'for the hell of it.' The protest ended when the lunch mods/periods arrived.
Finally, the protest was enacted long after the decision for said cuts were finalized.
This is not to say that they were all bad and that no one cared, those who did (mainly the top 10% or 20% students and their parents along with some teachers) went to the Board meetings. It was, however, still after the decision was finalized.
Here's an article about it from New York Time's.

Additionally, my school's news paper had two articles about it, one was praising in much the same way as the NYT article and used at least one made up quote (and probably a few made up events), the other one blamed rich people (if I can find it the newspaper, I'll expand on these).
